Pastors say they take instructions from God

— not earthly authorities

BY NADINE WILSON Observer staff reporter wilsonn@jamaicaobserver.com

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

TWO respected pastors are maintaining that dictates of conscience should always take precedence over law.

According to head of the Holiness Christian Church, Bishop Alvin Bailey, pastors ought to take their instructions from God and not from any individual or authority in power.

"We operate on a higher mandate, uncompromising, unapologetically. It is what God says that goes and if we are convinced in our minds that God says so, we have to do so," he told editors and reporters during the Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange forum.

Bailey's remark came against the backdrop of last week's charging of fellow clergyman Merrick 'Al' Miller, who was caught escorting fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke to the United States Embassy in Kingston.

Coke, who was wanted by the United States to answer drug and gunrunning charges, has since been extradited to the North American country.

Miller, in the meantime, has received both praises and harsh criticisms for his assistance to Coke. On Friday he was formally charged with harbouring a fugitive and perverting the course of justice. Miller, who is out on $200,000-bail, will make his first court appearance on Friday.

At the Monday Exchange, rector of the Stella Maris Catholic Church Monsignor Michael Lewis, while agreeing that conscience prevails over earthly authorities said, spiritual leaders must also be prepared to face the consequences that come with them breaking the law to appease their conscience.

"Should it get to a point where you do have a public law and it violates an individual's conscience, then he or she must understand that if you break that law, if you break the law of the land to satisfy conscience, then you understand very clearly that there are implications for that and you must be willing to deal with that," he said.

"If there is good to be done, though it may be difficult, though we may be threatened, though we may become martyred for it, we do it nonetheless, because that is what we are called to do, that is the witness value of our lives," he added.

Lewis' comments was in line with Miller's message Sunday to congregants at his Fellowship Tabernacle Church on Washington Boulevard in Kingston during which he said he was acting on the guidance of his conscience.

"In a dilemma such as the one I faced a few days ago, it is conscience that I fell back on when I said I was right. I am right to follow my conscience. Fault me on how you see the outcome, but do not fault me on my conscience. God and God alone is the judge of my conscience," he said.

When asked how they would have dealt with the situation had they been placed in a similar position as Reverend Miller, Monsignor Lewis said he would have sat down with Coke to discuss the implications of his actions.

However, Bishop Bailey said the expediency of the situation would have dictated how he behaves.

"You don't ask what the law says very often, the expediency of the situation often dictates the response in every quarters," he said.

"Christianity must not and cannot be seen as a code of written laws, rules and regulations that we confirm to, so that anytime we have to move we have to check the codes," Bailey later added.

Classic case of taking the Lord's name in vain. Conveniently using God's name to suit their own desire and 'conscience'. Jesus himself said render unto Caesar what is due to Caesar. Not once did Jesus break the law of the land, and for THAT He was crucified - He didn't do what 'church people' expected Him to do. But no, not you guys - y'all wanna play hero and break the law to make yourselves look good in the eyes of your flock... Romans 13:1-6... Memba dat...

The Bible says we ought to obey God rather than men. If a human law is against the commandments of God the christian should obey god and suffer the consequences which could be imprisonment, isolation and martyrdom. Just ask the christians of China and Saudi Arabia for example.
.
How many pastors and their flock really take obedience seriously?

Monsignor Lewis seems to be more balanced than Bishop Bailey. Indeed, a Christian must be prepared to face the consequences for breaking the law by virtue of the guidance of conscience. I am afraid that what these two men of the cloth are saying amounts to moral relativism. It is very dangerous to just rely on your conscience when you are making moral decisions. These pastors fail to apply their theology of sin to the discussion about conscience. The reality is that it is flawed.

I would advise anyone hearing voices telling them what to do, or think they were told to do something "in a dream" to have their head examined. You need medication.

Rev. Al, Head, Transformational unit, OPM, had to take instructions from the PM.
Golding has declared himself the Chief Servant and has not yet accorded himself any divine label.

Religion is an insult to human diginitiy, in the normal course of events good people will do mostly good things and bad people will do mostly bad things...
Religion allows the good and the bad to to do bad things in the name of god!

When the evidence comes "marching in" it will not matter who or what voices they heard or from whom they take their orders.
The police said that they acted on "intelligence" in the rev's case so they have the information in regards to the case.

So how come so many christians get wiped out by olint and cash plus? How come so many pastors were preaching the fact that god wanted christians prosper and running sub clubs creaming off 3 percent and 4 percent? The instructions were muddled there? or you just use god when it suit yopu?...
Tell you what..when you languishing in jail for breaking the law at least you will do your time with a clear sense of being right....you however will do the time though cause the law is for all!!!

It is time to break the link between the church and politicians. This link was fostered to secure votes and it catapult pastors to prominece. The GG is a big-time pastor! AL Miller got too big and now believes that the laws of the land should not dictates his actions. Well, now that he is "reminded" that he is not in heaven he will have to bear the consequences of his contempt for earthly laws. The full book must be thrown at him to send a message to others who contemplate and preach as such.

I am very disappointed in your statement Bishop Bailey - you are so wrong. God is not an author of confusion and He said that He honors His words than His name.
Bishop Bailey I would like you to read Romans 13:1-3; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peters 2:13-14 and also 1 Peter 5:5. It mind boggling when a Pastor uses the scripture only when it suits them and Bishop don't forget that God is not mocked.
Remember now Bishop we all are subject to the law of the land including you and Rev Al.

Church leaders must use their god give conscience to help the poor & the needy , not only material needs but spiritual needs as well. The question is what role the church played since police/military operation in tivoli gardens & west kingston? Now that coke is no longer there its an opportunity to establish a relationship with the community . Political system has failed the people. Their only hope is GOD. lets judge the church by their work for a better & brighter future for jamaica. Peace.

I would just point out to the Godly gentlemen that it is the same reasoning paranoid schizophrenics use when acting on the voices in their head. mental illness is serious so I am not making a joke. Just saying...

Hogwash, absolute hogwash. These charasmatic "pastors" need to go back and read their bibles. In their haste to grab parishoners' $$ and insert themselves in politics, they've forgotten what the Bible teaches. No where in the Bible does it say, christians are to break the law! Now they are pontificating "Devine rule". "In that day, I shall say depart from me, you workers of inquity." (Jesus Christ) Who are these workers of inquity? Why $$ grabing pastors, of course. They need to repent!

The stance taken by these clergymen is a very contradictory one,and I'm convinced that they have failed to adhere to their own doctrines. It's impossible for any society to exist without rules & regulations; these same pastors, have made rules by which their congregations are governed. At age 22, I was disfellowshipped from my flock, because I had a common-law wife, and I had rejected the church's advice to turn my home into a matrimonial one. So, how my pastor's conscience neva seh, "lo di man?"

george bush said god told him to go into iraq. an "ordinary" god fearing man can also say god told him to do what he did- if this is in violation of the law of the land would you support such a person mr. pastor men? is it ok for a muslim man to also do what his god told him to do irespective of the law of the land? or is this only a thing between a christian man and his christian god?
if it was really jackass who say di earth nuh level- jackass is not as dumb as we think he is.

Mr. Bailey's belief that one's conscience must take precedence over the law just because he's a Pastor should be of major concern to us all as he might be opening up a can of worms here. There is a verse in the bible which tells us that we must obey those who are set over us. There are enough fake/corrupt "PASTORS" that would love to hide behind this precedence.

So does Osama Bin Laden, the little tyrant in Iran, George Bush, The pedophile priests and even that pastor who was complicit in the assault of the year old girl.
BTW, the great Bob Marley felt the vibes too.

As a pastor I have had criminals coming to me for advice & refuge. In order to get them to cooperate U have to let them know they can trust you but in so doing they often have some tough or risky request like in this case going to the US embassy rather than to the police. Some cops are happy trigger & U are often afraid they may come in & kill both of U. Also It is very hard to get a criminal to surrender. Once U get too pushy they stop trusting U so U have 2 play it as it comes. U have 2 B wise

No, pastor Bailey! When you hear a voice telling you to break the law of the land, that is not God. It is the absence of your medication. The one that controls psychotic behaviour. God does not promote lawlessness!

Right. Such hypocrisy. Are we to believe then, that the two carloads of gunmen escorting Miller while he chauffered Dudus were the angels God claimed would "encamp round about them that fear Him"? (Psalm 91) If the pastors are going to invoke divine privilege for their unlawful deeds, then they had better follow God's word to the letter and stop trying to disingenuously set themselves up as arbiters of moral rectitude. The bible should not be used as a tool of expedience. Shame on you all.

I agree...if God says it, then do it recognising that there are consequences for breaking the law. I however believe leniency must be shown given the fact that Al's actions have saved numerous lives and have resulted in commendations given to the Government and Security Officials in their 'swift' actions in bringing a fugitive to face his charges.
Commendations to Al Miller for listening to the voice of God despite the impending judgement.

Bishop Bailey, you should continue taking instructions from God. Maybe God's grand design for you is that you should be punished by the laws of man.

Really now? So anarchy is what they are talking about? Anyone who follows the commandments in the bible has no problem following the law of the land. I said "bible" specifically, because other religions practiced by Rastafarians, Muslims, Indians and Chinese in Jamaica may read other books different from the New Testament.

Come on pastor, don't care whatever instruction you get it must be within the law of the land,no excuse, did God instruct rev miller to bypass the police, and pick up that fugitive ?,did god instruct him to dress up the crime lord like a lady?,did he tell him to lie to the police, that everything was OK,while have a wanted man on board?,did he instruct him to speed away before the lawmen finish question him?,we all know god is good,am sure those was not his instruction,so wheel and come again,

Pastors you are indeed correct, your actions has to be guided by Devine Power. Mans way is not Gods way. There are clear demarkation. You aught to obey God rather than man, and thats the bibical principle. However if the law of the land is broken, you must be prepareed to bear the consequence. Rev, Miller did what was correct according to his conscience, and must be prepared to face the consequences whatever that may be.The question we should all ask ourselves What would God do in the situation

Where an individual turns for inspiration is strictly a personal and a private matter. It should not be anyone else's concern, except when it results in disregard for the laws or the incitement of others to do the same. If we, as a people, are to remain free, and avoid anarchy, we simply cannot afford to tolerate deviant behaviors, whatever the motivation.

I wonder which god they talking about, cause nuff of them only following the word of the "money" god and not the big man up top...Then again if they can say that is god instructions they are following, what they say to all the fornicating, stealing, lying and two faced antics that that we are constantly hearing, with regard to our local preachers? Is that too instructed by god, or only when its convenient?

Just remember Jamaica is a country of laws. I hope God dont tell you to break the law, because you will pay just like any other citizens. It comes to mind that these pastors don't respect the law and they are objective so to the goverment and police enforcing the law. Maybe curving the law put a dent in the collection plate.
