MONTEGO BAY, St James — A Montego Bay traffic cop who was allegedly caught trying to solicit money from a motorist two weeks ago, was offered bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Forty-nine year old Constable Milton Jarrett, a 23-year member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, was offered bail in the sum of $500,000 with up to three sureties.
He was charged with breaching the Anti-Corruption Act after being caught in a police sting operation.
The allegations are that Jarrett solicited money from a motorist whose vehicle had been impounded. Jarrett allegedly demanded $20,000 for its release.
A sting operation was set up and Jarrett and another cop were held along a busy thoroughfare in Montego Bay on August 26.
The other cop, a sergeant, was released without charge.
Jarrett will return to court on February 14, 2011 when his trial will begin. A stop order has been placed on him at all ports.
