OCHO RIOS, St Ann — The son of a policeman is now in hospital under police guard after he was reportedly shot and wounded during a police operation here this morning.
Police have not yet released the full details of the incident, but have confirmed that an illegal gun was allegedly taken from the injured man.
The police said shortly after 10:00 this morning, they went to the depressed Mansfield Heights community — better known as Fauklands — in search of wanted men and illegal guns.
It is reported that on the approach of the police team, the man reportedly pulled a gun and pointed it at the cops.
According to the police, they took evasive action and opened fire, hitting the man.
The police said they retrieved an illegal gun from the man, whose father is a sergeant of police attached to the Trelawny police.
This morning’s shooting follows another yesterday where an off duty cop reportedly shot and killed a man, also from the Fauklands community, outside the Blitz Night Club in Ocho Rios.
The police had earlier reported that the policeman had just exited the club with a female friend when the man identified as 35-year-old Richard Eric Gabbidon pulled a gun and pointed it at the lawman.
The policeman reportedly opened fire hitting Gabbidon. He died in hospital.
The Bureau of Special Investigations has launched a probe into that incident.
