Cops freed

TWO police constables on Tuesday walked away from the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court free men, after the director of public prosecutions (DPP) suspended the corruption charges against them.
The DPP entered a conditional nolle prosequi, suspending the charges due to several unsuccessful attempts to get the complainant, who is currently overseas, to attend for trial.
The conditional nolle prosequi means that the men could again be brought before the court should the complainant make himself available.
Constables Shaine James and Kemmar Campbell, both from the Denham Town Police Station in Kingston, were arrested in July 2008 on allegations that they had planted bullets in the car of the complainant, from whom they then demanded $500,000 in return for his freedom.
The matter was reported and a sting operation set up which led to the arrest of James and the recovery the complainant's passport and iPhone from James' car. Campbell was subsequently arrested.
The cops were represented by attorneys Christopher Townsend and Vincent Wellesley.
