Local police to train sniffer dogs

THE Jamaica Constabulary Force is planning to start a programme to train its own cadaver-sniffing dogs to boost the investigating capabilities of the police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Les Green told the Observer Thursday that the police were looking to start the programme, following a successful operation in Tivoli Gardens where two sniffer dogs that were brought in the island from the United States were used to sniff out possible burial sites.

"The operation using the sniffer dogs was successful and we believe that starting a programme to train our own sniffer dogs would only help to boost the local authority's capability," Green said.

Green said the US search team, which spent two weeks in Jamaica, was called on to aid the police following the discovery of a body in a shallow grave in the West Kingston community on June 9.

Detectives from the Major Investigation Task Force said the body, which was found near Rasta City, was in a kneeling position, with hands and feet bound and mouth gagged.

Police said the person appeared to have been shot.

Police have since carried out several other searches and have found number of shallow graves and other items resembling bones, but tests have returned negative.

Police have also reported that several bones were found in the May Pen Cemetery, but could not determine if the bones were brought there or were from shallow graves.

ACP Green is to have a meeting with Kingston's Mayor Desmond McKenzie to discuss the matter.

While the security forces are at it, they should also develop a good K-9 unit throughout the Island. I'm tired of reading about all these thugs evading police after a police chase. A good K-9 unit would result in more capture of these criminals that are forcing law abiding Jamaicans to seek refuge behind burglar bars.

Perhaps the canines will better able to sniff out more felons than the police. They're infinitely smarter.

I am very surprised there was no sniffer dogs in the force, it seems like the gun was the answer for solving all crimes. Anyway it's better late than never.

Thanks to those from abroad who assisted JA recently. At the same time, I'm proud that Jamaican authorities will now take what they have learned from the US canine experts and use that knowledge to train the dogs for future use. As I have suggested previously, Jamaicans don't have to imitate everything Americans do, but we can take valid and pertinent lessons from them for the betterment of JA.
