No doubling of university fees — Holness

By LUKE DOUGLAS, Observer writer

Thursday, July 29, 2010

MINISTER of Education Andrew Holness says there will be no doubling of university fees for the year 2011-2012.

Any increases, he said, will be over the long-term and with adequate notice

Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry this morning, Holness said tertiary tuition fees will be increased gradually and will coincide with changes in the Student Loan Bureau (SLB) policy.

“The capital base of the SLB is being increased significantly to enable more students to borrow,” Holness said.

He said the repayment period will also be increased and interest rates reduced.

Eventually, he said the requirement to have guarantors will also be removed.
