HOMICIDE investigators are hoping to lay charges soon against a man they suspect is responsible for last month’s murder of an eight-year-old girl in Olympic Gardens, St Andrew.

“We picked him up about 3:00 Tuesday evening during an operation in the community,” said Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, head of the St Andrew South Police Division.

“We will have to go through the identification parade process, so that is what we are waiting on now to see what is what,” added Hewitt, who declined to give a timeline for the identification parade.

Police said Jodian Bignal was shot multiple times by four gunmen who broke open a window to her home on Mahogany Road, and peppered the house with bullets.

She was rushed to hospital where she died while being treated.

Less than a day after the incident, investigators theorised that her death may have been a result of a heated feud between men in a section of the community known as ‘Back Road’ and others on Tower Avenue.

"We have heard names but I can tell you that there is a gang war in that area for about two weeks now. Men from 'Back Road' have been at war with others from Tower Avenue and there have been cases of shootings back and forth," Hewitt told the Observer.

Hewitt said that the police are currently keeping a strong presence in the area, and vowed to bring all the persons responsible for Jodian’s death to justice.

He said he is seeking the public’s assistance in locating at least three other persons who are suspected to be involved in the murder.
