Rev Al Miller in rare moment misses church
BY INGRID BROWN Observer senior reporter browni@jamaicaobserver.com
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
REV Al Miller rarely misses the Tuesday night meeting of his congregation. But last night he was absent following the announcement that he was wanted by the police for questioning after members of the security forces intercepted the car he was driving in the company of fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke aboard.
But not even the possibility that their spiritual leader might be arrested could dampen the praise from the scores of faithful members who showed up to offer prayer and praise for their beloved pastor.
Dubbed as a nation builder, Miller has often come under flak for his controversial statements and actions, but nothing seemed to surpass yesterday's episode in which the firebrand pastor was found in the company of Jamaica's most wanted man.
Launching into choruses that reflect the greatness of God, the congregation offered up prayers of protection and comfort for Miller and his family.
A message delivered to the congregation from Miller, via his nephew Jerrold Johnson, urged members not to "worry or fret" about the current situation.
"There is the possibility that he could be arrested and pastor wants you to know this," Johnson told the congregation.
But according to Johnson, no one could have orchestrated yesterday's happening the way God had.
"From a personal standpoint you might not have agreed with what he did but you will have to work through your convictions," he told the congregation.
He reminded them that they must be prepared to hear various comments about their pastor when they return to work today, but urged them not to be disheartened as God is working things out.
Elder Fitzroy Lewis urged the congregation to hold fast to the scriptures, despite the many questions they may have.
"God shows us the plan of the enemy, but he is about to confuse what the enemy is trying to do," he said.
He added that this is a wonderful time to give God thanks despite the turbulence, as the church broke out into much jubilation.
But although many engaged in praise, the anxious looks on the faces of other congregants could not be hidden.
"We won't allow the enemy to distract us from giving thanks in all things," Lewis encouraged them.
But Miller, up until Observer press time last night, had not turned himself over to the police for questioning.
Earlier in the day, Miller told the Observer that Coke was on his way to voluntarily give himself up to the United States officials.
"He was willing to commit to due process and prepare to waive his extradition rights and go with the process straight to the United States," Miller told the Observer.
He explained that he agreed to take Coke to United States officials at the US Embassy after he made contact with him earlier in the day.
And that was just what he was doing when the vehicle he was driving was intercepted by the police Along the Mandela Highway which connects St Catherine and the capital city of Kingston. Coke was taken into custody and the police informed Miller that he was free to go.
But less than two hours later, the police issued an advisory for Miller to turn himself in even as police commissioner Owen Ellington questioned why he was allowed to leave the scene in the first place.

Oh so its clear that not even the Rev dont trust the Jamaican police so why should mr Coke trust them

Al wanted the glory of another handover. Like any celebrity, he likes to be in the news and if he is not, he will create the news. When Dudus called, him shoulda say "pawdy me we come with u but with u lawyer" I think his lawyer would have served him better at such a time while Al prays. He shouldnt allow himself to be caught alone with Dudus, it no look good. But since him love the celebrity life he needs to look around to see who will play him in the movie version of "DRIVING MR PRESI"
6/23/2010
But Dudu-puss is really an ugly chap! He looks more like 50!
6/23/2010
If this so-called Reverend Gentleman broke the Law then he should be prosecuted. He had no right to circumvent the law by trying to bring Dudus personnaly to the US Embassy. I personally question his connections with this criminal. It is time we in Jamaica stop paying homage to these so-called disciples of God who according to the words odf Bob Marley "if night should turn to day a lot of them would run away".

I do not understand this Pastor, Rev Miller who should be an inteligent menber of society. Why get yourself so entangled in this mess with a fugitive of the state? I understand the initial attempts to assist in the intrest of peace for the country, but after that effort failed why continue to be so involved? Does the Rev not know that there is a legal process which Mr. Coke will have to go through in Jamaica first before he is delivered to the United States authorities?...
6/23/2010
Mr Miller, the Bible says "Render to Ceaser the things that are Caesar's and to God, the things that are God's". This means that as Christians we need to obey the laws of the country so long as they do not conflict with the laws of the Almighty God, which includes the Ten Commands which you and others believe no longer applies to God's people. REPENT. May the Jamaican law have its full course with you. May God forgive you too.

It is baffling that a man of faith would be using gunmen to escort his vehicle while on an errand of mercy. What about the powerful bible verses from Psalm 91 that claim that God will send his sngels to "keep guard over thee and keep thee in all thy ways"? Why didn't the man of God ask that these guards be deployed? Just goes to show how much faith these parsons have in these prayers which are purely academic and have no earthly use.

Ther has always been something sinister abot rhe Rev. I never trusted that man . Wasn't he the same one who came out defiantly against the extradition of Coke.?OK ,I see , he had a transformation , a change of heart , and decided to be the hero who hands over Coke to the U S . AHHH REV,
6/23/2010
We Now have 2010 (BUCK AND THE PREACHER) would he be pulling his gun from the bible, LOL I knew it i keep saying it .From I read All What AL Miller say about he was on his way to TG on the 24-5-10 I know he was in contact with him. Now Jamaica can have there own movie Coke and the Preacher. Think i need to buy a pair of extra ears.
6/23/2010
all miller rais the bar to showe the level of corruption we afi deal wid day to day .. yu si the reason wy nuff a we nu go church dem a fake dem nu straith is all abouth money you remember the famouse bobmarley line a feel like bamming a church

If Rev. Miller does not come up with a good story he shall miss many, many more Tuesday night meetings. I hope he is detained just ike anybody else, processed and if nothing is found against him be released at the end of the the State of Emergency, not before.
6/23/2010
If he was transporting a fugitive, why was he allowed to go. If he was me would they have let me go? Jamaica is so mixed up or they have incompetent officers who have no clue about their responsibility in keeping a witness. He must know all along where the criminal was and probable was his chauffeur getting him from place to place. Maybe in his house. He has committed a crime. Christian or not. As a christian I would not be treated special had it been me. Lets see how he will be treated.
6/23/2010
Apparently Coke does not get it. He wanted to go directly to the USA and not answer for what he caused in west Kingston. If he had stepped up and told the government that he would waive challenging the extradition order none of the over 70 Jamaicans would have died. But no, he may have had people like Rev Al Miller advising him. It is no God plan and it is certainly not God thwarting the minds of the enemy. Who is the enemy? Talk about talking baloney. Coke must answer for what took place.

Hilarious cartoon
6/23/2010
How can we be quick to demonise Al Miller? He has done things the security forces were unable to do. He has sped up the justice process by bringing in Livity, Sandra, and was bringing in Coke as well, according to his statement, which we have no reason to distrust considering he already brought in the two siblings. Hopefully he wasn't harbouring Coke in any capacity, and that the limit of his aiding a criminal was just encouraging Coke to give up and go to the Embassy.
6/23/2010
All who wants dudus to be captured alive can thank Miller. Even though some people will be critical of his actions. After so many deaths & destructions thank god that his apprehension there were no blood shed. Support the security force and their fight against crime .
6/23/2010
Some hailed Dudus a hero and I am sure there are people who will see Mr. Al Miller as that too, but I think he did it for the money. There are good people and there are heroes. When I think about heroes the people comes to mind are those who put their own well being, with no real personal gain on the line for the justice of others. I.e. President Lincoln who signed a bill to free slaves in America knowing they could not even vote for him. Paul Bogle in the days when it was not “cool” to be black, risked his own live to lead a protest for the freedom of innocent imprisoned black men. Marcus Garvey who travelled nooks and crannies at home and abroad promoting equal rights for black people, the fictional character superman and lastly someone who rushed into a burning house or jumped into a river to save another living being. Now I wonder, is the Famous Al going to become the Infamous Al?
6/23/2010
Al Miller we need answers, Jamaica needs answers.
Since the JLP became the government Al Miller has risen to high places and rubs shoulders with influential people. A close confidant of the PM.
6/23/2010
Where is the Reverend who knows where to find all the cokes? Al Miller what was all the letters published in the papers about?
Elder Fitzroy Lewis urged the congregation to hold fast to the scriptures, despite the many questions they may have.
"God shows us the plan of the enemy, but he is about to confuse what the enemy is trying to do," he said.
Who is the enemy? I ask.
6/23/2010
A wanted man asks you to take him some place and you agree and start transporting him. Then we preach about reporting crime to the relevant authorities.Oh this is no ordinary man, this is a man who started THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.He is so smart
6/23/2010
REV.MILLER i am not the one 2 judge you but this is why my church is my heart.ur story just don't add up sir
6/23/2010
Wow, thats all that i can say.........But then on second thought.....Why did Al get himself caught up in this mess? First, Leighton, then Sandy and Now Dudus!!! What a sum'uh?!
6/23/2010
When will the lies end?..And MESSAGE TO SOME CHURCH PEOPLE,OPEN UNNUH EYES AND STOP BELIEVE INNA MAN.
6/23/2010
Rev Al shoulda be commissioner of police bwoy him got intelligence gallore. But instead he will be the first Dudus scapegoat with so much more to come. How come Bruce still a run things and the rev is a wanted man.
6/23/2010
Let us not be quick to condemn the Reverend. I believe he acted in the best interest of all the parties involved and I'm happy that there was no further loss of life in Mr. Coke's capture. I suspect that the Reverend's phone was tapped.
6/23/2010
I do hope he is not harmed. This man must be feeling used. I sometimes feel sympathy for him.
6/23/2010
lock up Al Miller! He knew where Coke was all along and never informed the relevant authorities! Does he think he is bigger than the Law? Good job in the interception, law enforcers!
6/23/2010
What do we constitute harboring ? what is the role of the clergy ? what is the role of a lawyer?
if he were in the car with his lawyer would it be considered harboring ?
Did the Rev sheltered Dudus by hiding him from the police or was he merely called in to transport him to the US embassy in order to end this stand off knowing that this is the only way Mr Coke would turn himself in. Would this have ended worst with more bloodshed if the minister was not present , furthermore do we consider the many lawyers who accept blood money from know criminals to defend and get them bails putting them back on the streets to kill and create mayhem aiding and abetting or just doing their jobs?
The police have i right to have all the answers and interviewing the REV is certainly appropriate, but crucifying the rev without knowing all the facts is borderline stupid, in my eyes.
It might very well be that REV should be honored for his bravery instead of being vilified , We are all independent thinkers logic should always override emotions , not to mention blinkered political affiliation .
6/23/2010
How outrageous, who does Miller think he is? A man of GOD would not be so dishonest. When are we going to stop placing these sort of people on a pedestal. Why on earth would the police have let him leave the scene? Becuase he was driving a BMW or becuase he was off to collect his 5 million. A person of God Miller is NOT. What a shame and disgrace we have to endure these sub-humans.
6/23/2010
The problem with Rev. Miller in my opinion is that if a egg him want to be in the red. Not saying he hasn't done any good but it is his motives I question.
Pastors really should spend time with sinners, not to help us to break the law but to help us give our lives to God.
6/23/2010
Why do people keep intending on hiding behind the Church when things go wrong for them? Why did not Al. Miller call the U.S. Marshall's to pick up Coke? Why was in in the presence of a wanted fugitive? Is it not against the law to harbor or associate with a wanted person? TRUE CHRISTIANS ARE NOT LIKE AL MILLER THAT TRY TO PROTECT CRIMINALS. TRUE CHRISTIANS OBEY THE LAW! It is people like Al Miller that make people ridicule the true Christians among us!!
6/23/2010
Mr. Commish, please pipe-down, leave the rev alone, you and your officers should now shut your months.
6/23/2010
While this war continues, we should still ensure that corrupt security and police officers are purged from the force.
6/23/2010
The security forces will soon verify the Rev's statement. I do hope if not coroborated he will face the full might of the law. You can tell the thought pattern in his church as the elder and congregation seem to refer to the security forces as "forces of evil". I also hope that charges will be made against Dudus for his organization of the West Kingston blockade and the assault on the State. Dudus should be wise and not take the fall alone but take the mighty with him.
6/23/2010
incompetent police hope they at least get the license plate number of those cars.
6/23/2010
Miller and Coke need to say who these people travelling in front and behind were. I suspect there might be squaddies in the mix.
6/23/2010
I dont believe Miller. Who are these worshippers calling the enemy, dudus or the police? It is the law and lawyers that will work things out Miller. If he was genuinely bringing in Coke he will be freed, if he was assisting Coke then dawg nyam him last supper.
Pastor you should have handed in yourself immediately upon hearing you are wanted for questioning. Maybe he can hide as good as dudus, as he always knows where to find these people. Assisting criminals and travelling with gunmen security
6/23/2010
Miller will be question and will be freed, he was instrumental in taking into custody Coke's brother and sister.
In this case it may appear he was circumventing the law, but it was the same Miller who after consultation with the JLP/PNP was speaking with Coke in TG before the incursion about turning himself over to the police.
Miller was in this case making good on that promise. I do not see him being charged with harbouring a criminal, he will be just fine.
6/23/2010
When worldlians break the law they talk about, "The man". When Christians break the law they blame, "the enemy".This Dudus is an alleged common criminal and unless he MIller is his personal Pastor, I see no need for him to be intimately involved..
6/23/2010
Why up until church time Mr. Miller had not yet turned himself in to the police? Why did he not insist on staying with Dudus after capture, but slink off? Why? Why? Why?
I hope that by today we will hear that the goodly parson has been charged with a number of crimes and has been detained. After all we are in a State of Emergency.
If he is not apprehended shortly a bounty should be put on his head and he be deemed to be armed and dangerous.
It is time we stop pussyfooting around in this country and realize that the criminals are all around us and that they come in all guises.
6/23/2010
I have found the delirious, unquestioned following of Politicians in Jamaica and Pastors in America to be so reckless. People seem to lose their head and common sense.
If one is caught with a wanted man without making any prior arrangements, one should go down. NO amount of bawling and praying should let one escape the flouting of the law. We will doubtless hear the old arguments about, poverty, and black this light skin that, lack of this, Pastah that... He must be made an example.
6/23/2010
I think the Rev. Miller should be questioned not only for this, but for his finances and that his past associations be thoroughly investigated. He has so many questions to answer. If Mr. Coke had contacted him and asked to be taken to the Embassy why didn’t he tell the police, without giving any location? Suppose some trigger happy policeman ha recognized Dudus and decide to kill all in the car? Did he contact the Embassy and advise them of Mr. Coke’s intentions? Did he contact Mr. Coke’s attorney and tell him of the developments (phone records will prove).
