SDA pastor hails J'can ganja as the World's best
BY PAUL HENRY Sunday Observer staff reporter henryp@jamaicaobserver.com
Sunday, May 23, 2010
IF you entered the Andrews Memorial Church Seventh-day Adventist Church two Saturdays ago with any doubt as to which country produced the highest grade marijuana crop, your darkness would have no doubt been enlightened after listening to Pastor Lorenzo King's cutting sermon.
Not only did the controversial King reveal that Jamaica had the highest grade ganja, he also named St Elizabeth, St Ann and Westmoreland as the parishes where the country's best weed can be found.
King's hailing of the weed came as he spoke of a conspiracy by former United States President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s to destroy the crop, while questioning whether this was done, as officially stated, in the interest of national and regional security or to keep Jamaica poor.
"What is the truth behind the destruction of the ganja population in Jamaica?" King rhetorically asked congregants, among them Lorna Golding, the wife of Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
"We know that ganja can mad you. I don't need anybody to tell me anything to refute that because I have seen it. And I know that you can smoke ganja and you can live a normal life forever. I know that. What is the truth behind the destruction of the ganja population?"
Relating a version of the truth of the destruction, which he recently gleaned from a man — whom he said "spoke a truth stranger than fiction" — King said that the US gave 12 helicopters to the Jamaica Defence Force with the mandate to find and destroy the ganja population in Jamaica.
The reason, he said, was that researchers at the University of the West Indies had refused to sell the patent for their "glaucoma formula" from cannabis to a US pharmaceutical company for US$6 million.
"Is that in the national or regional interest? Or isn't that intended to keep us poor; because maybe, the Jamaican ganja, is the best ganja in the world," King said to a mixture of surprise and laughter.
"It is scientifically proven, it is the best ganja in the world... The best parishes in Jamaica to grow ganja are Westmoreland, St Elizabeth and St Ann. These are the best parishes," King said.
Added King: "Is it because this was a crop which was an invention that would lift us out of poverty? Think about it, governments are not in the business of truth-telling. So because of that, brothers and sisters, intelligent people relate to official government statements with a healthy dose of suspicion. I suspect every official statement that is made by the Government.
"And I am suspicious because I know the difference between information, misinformation and disinformation and if you don't know, do a little reading," he told congregants.

To Ramon Castro:
I was baptized in the Adventist.. All my parents untill Today are adventist. The question to you is, Doe's God produced anything which is Unclean for us?. Is Marijuana not a natural plant just as all the other plants on the Planet? Are you discriminating against Nature?. and if so why?. because others are? Why prejudice in failing to acknowledge Marijuana as a natural product of Nature? Alcohol which is a extract from the Sugar Cane is allowed to be sold without a problem. Just recently in Switzerland University Students were allowed to have a Cup of Ganja Tea from weed they had produced. I was mentally stimulated from a very small Spliff, One Morning just before attending my final exam at C.A S.T. Now U tech. The result was more than I was expecting. I was given credits and distinctions for all Subjects. This was the H.N.C. (Higher National) final in Electrical Engineering.
It's more a C.N.S drug. it act's on the Central nervous system. can be dangerous..

The observer is fast becoming a dirty tabloid. Instead of apologizing to the pastor for misquoting him, the observer has chosen to attack the pastor. How and why is this story a headline? In what context was his refence to ganja used? I am sure the whole sermon was not about JAMAICAN HIGHGRADE GANJA. C'mon JA observer do better than that!!!!
5/23/2010
The role of the pastor goes beyond just preaching the word in the traditional sense..The Pastor is also a teacher who must open the eyes and mind of the congregation..What Pastor King has highlighted is a known fact ..Jamaica ganja has the highest THC content and funny enough the USA has been trying to produce ganja unsuccessfully with the same high grade...I must say that i dont smoke ganja nor cigarettes nor do i think the pastor does, but the truth is the truth ....Knowledge is power....Keep up the good work Pastor King

I don't normally listen to pastors but this is gospel. In a little while from now ganja will cure EVERYTHING and we are in a position to cultivate ganja all year long. This will create jobs for a lot of the youths.Legalize ganja now Mr Golding, time is against us.
By LAW
5/23/2010
@ramon castro. Pastor not advocating for the use, he is advocating for research and legalisation.
5/23/2010
You cannot blame him, he has an audience incl. the presence of the So called PM (wife). However what he saying is absolutely true. This pastor is hinting to the PM to legalize it and Jamaican can see their way out of an economical slump. The reaction from the USA will be swift. So Jamaica keep growing the good stuff but keep it to ourselves.

This article appears simply to be an attempt by Mr Paul Henry to try and discredit Pastor King after he complained that Mr Henry had misrepresented what he said. If this was such a news worthy item, why did he wait two weeks before publishing it?
It is great that the Church tries to discuss topics that are of relevance to our society. Mr King might or might not be correct in what he said, but have the views of pastors all over Jamaica being analysed with the same scrutiny being paid to this man? Come on Observer, stop this attempt at character assassination.
5/23/2010
The Average Jamaican should know that what Pastor King have said is a reality. I've heard Rastas speak about the best parishes to produce Ganja. King is only being Realistic. I saw a report recently where a University in America is at present, studying Ganja Cultivation; how to produce the best Marijuana, several plants were exposed to the camera, and almost all of those Students are Ganja users. It has being Dubed the Ganja University. I have taped this programm. America is cultivating Ganja, but they are against us producing our Ganja. Marijuana is a natural resource produced by Nature, and some have developed a Grudge against this Plant. Britain is cultivating it for medical purposes according to them. We must distroy ours. This is very nasty of them.

Talk de thing dems Pastor. Yu haw mek up nutting, ajust reality you a preach. Big up the SDA church the only real religious organization in Jamaica. I have no problem with anything Pastor said. High grade Kiki does come from Yard. I need to go back to church fi real...

Only the "THUS SAITH THE LORD" should be preached from the pulpit!!!! All other utterances are not of God!!!!
5/23/2010
Isn't ganga illegal in Jamaica? It sound as if the "good" pastor is pitching a commercial for the weed, the decriminalization.
What if the 'good' pastor was pitching for tolerance for gays and lesbians in the country? Would we be so forgiving? The last time I read this was also illegal. I
Respect the law of the land.As a member of the Adventist Church I find it troubling that the "good" pastor would be advocating for the breaking of the law or at least by inferring to use, cultivating, sale of narcotic -- something that we Adventist frown upon.
Pastor, put your brain in gear but your mouth!!!
The l

More power to you, Pastor King. There are people who seem to believe that we should not touch certain subjects in the church. If we are not talking damnation theology (God a go wipe out dis; God a go wipe out dat; God a go bun dis; God a go bun dat), they tune out. You may just get some people to listen to you through these means.
.
As for "character assassination," are you all really serious? I learned of Pastor King a few days ago, and I am all in favor of what he has to say.
5/23/2010
Peace and Love, Pastor King !!
5/23/2010
Pastor King is assuming Jamaica has the best marijuana.
jamaica is behind most of the other producers.
5/23/2010
Instead of passing the collection plate around, we should just pass the cutchie pan de left hand side.
Then chant down Babylon--it a go bun!!
Jah know
JA Cynic
5/23/2010
Ok so will Pastor King claim that the observer misqouted him this time........Im trying to see how he would tie this topic into a sermon which is supposed to be primarily about reaching lost souls.
5/23/2010
The Jamaica Obserbver has proven its point "dont mess with the Jamaica Observer" point taken. This is character assasination in pure form, what did this man ever do to you. Oh I forgot he said you twisted his words, thats a kick in the mouth for freedom of speech and defending your rights. This is too obvious, or is the Observer running out of stories to cover?
5/23/2010
The observer is going for "overkill" on Pastor King's career, seriously how does this make headlines apart from just simply trying to hurt the man's credibility and integrity - you need to stop!
5/23/2010
OK, let's see...The church distances itself and say he speaks not for them. The he Pastor says he was misquoted. Sounds a lot like the " Whole stinking truth."
5/23/2010
Keep up your good work Pastor King!! Some of us are so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good. I hope that such sermons will encourage the people to read and seek information. In California and Arizona weed is cultivated and transported across the states by the trailer loads and the DEA turns a blind eye; confiscating only small amounts to give the impression that they have declared war on the weed!! Your sermons are of the highest grade, Sir!!! :)
5/23/2010
Very interesting...
5/23/2010
O...........K..............then!!!!
5/23/2010
I agree. Ganja is a big business in California and Canada. We in the Caribbean can profit from legalizing it. Many people around the world view ganja as part of Caribbean culture.
5/23/2010
Pastor Kings should probably take a dose of ganja himself and cool out! This brother needs to close his mouth before he eats his foot. I suspect that the SDA officials will try to silence him by transferring him to another church somewhere in Jamaica where his voice will not be heard. Why was he talking about ganja? There are more important things in this nation to talk or preach about? Then again, the context of what he said might be interesting. I suggest to my colleague that he should shut up before he is shipped out!
5/23/2010
This Lorenzo KIng is really a man of nature. He is calling for thruth and speaking truth. Keep on burning the eternal flame Rev. you are a light that shineth in darkness.
