State of emergency called

Jamaica Observer

Sunday, May 23, 2010

PRIME Minister Bruce Golding has declared a state of public emergency, limited to sections of Kingston and St Andrew effective 6:00 pm today.

Golding said that based on the advice of the security forces, the action has been taken so as to ensure public safety.

The state of emergency was called  following an emergency meeting of the Cabinet at 2.00 pm today.

"The Cabinet took the decision to advise the Governor General to issue a Proclamation pursuant to Section 26 of the Constitution declaring that a state of public emergency exists in the parishes of Kingston and St Andrew," a release from the Office of the Prime Minister said.

The proclamation shall remain in force for a period of one month unless extended by the House of Representatives or earlier revoked.

Meanwhile, gunshots continue to be fired in West Kingston and roadblocks have now been mounted as far as the intersection of Maxfield Avenue and Spanish Town Road.

Bruce you better call a truce because the army cannot handle the storm that is coming, many labourites are against your actions.
It seems you would like to see the streets run red with blood ! Can you not see the supporters willing to die for this man, and not for you? What a pity your pride is getting in the way of common sense.

It is one think to sea behind your computer and say what must happen but its another think when it is ur husband or father or son or brother out there facing the fire. I told everyone i know this is what would happen and they all say no it could not bu history have shown that this would have been the out come. Also it is obvious that the comments on this site is all political with each person defending and promoting there party. This mindset is why jamaica is like this, this partisan mindset where we the people put our party before our country, PJ did it for almost 20 years Seaga did it in his time and now BRUCE have done the same. until every single current member of parliament resign JAMAICA will continue to have dark dark days because the problem the problem is not just Tivoli and Mr Coke, it is we the people, who sell out our country for political spoils, we the people who protest and protect politicians we the people is the problem and in need of a serious change in our mindset

The chickens have come home to roost! The floodgates have been flung open! All hell has broken loose! The forces of evil are having their heyday! The security forces are cornered, outmaneuvered, and out-powered! The body politic is powerless and leaderless! There's chaos and mayhem in the land! We are reaping what we have sown. We have sown to the wind and are reaping the whirlwind. "Even so, come, Lord Jesus". No human can help us now. May God have mercy on us all!

@Ja Cynic yeah you brought up back the memories of the ad that the PNP used in the 2007 election in which they highlighted Bruce as a Flip Flop. What a reality shock that the flip flopping is actually happening.

Is this state of emergency for real, or is the prime minister lieing to us again??. you have no credibity sir please step aside before things get worst.
you have made it clear that you will be fighting on the side of Prezi and his cronies. so right now its a conflict of interest to keep acting as PM.

My question is why couldn't the Prime Minister limit the state of emergency in Tivoli Gardens and its surrounding areas!!!! instead of the entire Kingston and St Andrew..although prob that wouldnt make any sense cause this man seems to have his empire right across jamaica and the next place that state of emergency gonna be called is Spain and then Montego Bay..is this gonna get any worse..only God can help us (the Nation).

Both PNP and JLP are at fault for the further destruction of this country. Why did the PNP in the interest of this nation and for political points dealt with the issue on a non-partisan fashion. Resolve the issue without the political gesturing. No they would rather mash up the country to support Uncle Sam foreigner policy agenda. Crime will still be here long after Dudus, he is the symptom and not the cause. We need Jobs, Education and hope for the hopeless. once again politics has out weight common sense and good. They are 500 dudus in waiting. If both parties concentrated the effort which was given in the past month to this affair,Jamaica would be on it's way to becoming a great nation. Instead, we took what Uncle give us about this man, demonized him, criminalized him, and now executed base on a nation that dictates its foreign policy on lies, deception, half true and what is convenient for the current time. How fast we are to destroy our country for someone who would care less

This must be one of history's all-time ironies. The so-called defence of citizen's constitutional rights has led ultimately to the declaration of a Limited State Of Emergency
That involves the suspension of the citizens' constitutional rights for at least one month.
Flip- Flopping knows no bounds!!!

Under the circumstances, this is required.
Where a state of pubilc emergency exists to the extent that democratic institutions in Jamaica are threatened by subversion, the Governor General on the advice of the political executive must make such proclamation.
Once the dust has settled it will be important to fill the void with sustainable prorams for development, otherwise we will be right back here again in a couple of years. This is where the real debate must be focused.

This is the result of Bruce poor leadership, and now they will move IN for the kill. They are planning to kill Dudus so that he cannot speak, roam, or escape from TG. DO NOW SEE THE PLAN. The JLP govt. will HAVE A TOUGH TIME to be re-elected. They have done wrong to the Jamaican people. I think Dudus should have his day in court to answer if the USA had indeed violate Jamaican laws.

Is it the case that a government is expected to give over 2 hours notice of the intention to implement a Limited State Of Emergency?
Seems that this is being treated like an announcement of water lock- offs.

Damn disgrace!
After nine months of BS our lame-duck prime minister has to be forced to do his job to protect the people of this country. And you are all telling me he should not RESIGN?
Even in the midst of this crisis I am begging you to RESIGN sir. Mr Lewin said the evidence was acquired legally! RESIGN!! NOW!!!

State of Emergency? is that the best we can do? This doesnt mean anything to the people involved. The MP should go in and speak to his constituents.

See it deh now, Golding call state of emergency for Kgn and St Andrew lasting one month.
In 2007 they told the youths, that PNP was wicked when they called for a State of Emergency. Youths would repeat over and over again. They said Manley call state of emergency to ock up labourites.
Well forward to 2010, Bruce Golding have declared state of emergency to lock up labourites.

Okay I need the military to be called out on this one. I need firebombs and I need the area to be soften. This cannot be allowed to continue. As soon as the victory is won on this one we will have the dawn of a new political system in Jamaica: ( I don't know if we will consider proportional representation). We will wipe out the other lawless elements. We will create a safer future for our children. HOWEVER WE MUST WIN THIS WAR FIRST!!!!

A logical step, but lives are going to be lost, but this time I hope is not just the homeless people. There is no reason to this madness. I had hoped the courts would have stayed the execution of the warrant, to deescalate the rising tensions.

Well it will be interesting to see if this proclamation brings about some ACTION by the persons who are supposed to defend the state, or are we in for more of the waiting game and pleading with persons to remove barricades.
Hopefully the security forces will now begin to do what they are being paid to do and enforce the law, remove the roadblocks, take control of the garrison, and arrest and subdue all those who would attempt to engage them.

As far as I can see those maniacs do not care and they are trying to take as many people with them as they can. If they do not value their lives, they by the same token, do not value others.
The city should have been evacuated since this morning if not before. I would have taken those threats very seriously.
Evil is on the loose. Mad as hell.
