Thieves empty gas tanks on JUTC buses at Rockfort

Patrick Foster

Friday, July 30, 2010

THIEVES, on Monday night, emptied petrol from approximately 32 Jamaica Urban Transport Company (JUTC) buses stationed at the Rockfort depot in East Kingston, Transport Minister Mike Henry said Wednesday.

The transport minister said that similar break-ins and robbery at the East Kingston depot have occurred at least three to four times over the past month.

Henry, speaking at the Jamaica House post-Cabinet press briefing, said he was unable to place a figure on the total loss to JUTC but added that members of staff at the Rockfort depot were also at risk from thugs.

"The Rockfort depot poses serious challenges," Henry remarked, adding that the JUTC CEO has voiced concerns about the safety of employees at the east Kingston depot.

Henry told journalists that he intends to seek the assistance of the member of Parliament for the area in addressing the problem.

However, while highlighting the Rockfort depot, Henry said that other JUTC depots also had safety concerns.

"We have these problems on a regular basis," said Henry.

"Depots are built in areas which offer a level of threat," he added while reminding that former JUTC head Douglas Chambers was killed just outside the company's head office in Twickenham Park, Spanish Town, two years ago.

Meantime, Henry lauded the board of the JUTC for what he termed excellent work in the face of challenges.

@David Biles: Both you and Key maybe part of the problem. The very vast majority of Jamaicans are not thieves. If you are the geniuses you may think you are you'd notice that just by looking at your family ( I am assuming that you still have family in Jamaica) and your friends. Statements like the one uttered by Key says exactly the kind of person you are, or maybe you think this is a joke.

How could thieves get in and steal fuel from 32 buses and no one noticed? It is not exactly a quick process to siphon fuel from a tank.
.
I have a feeling this is an inside job.
.
How difficult can it be to secure this location? Put up fences all around and control who gains access. They could put up lights and cameras all around.
.
If that is too expensive, they could build double fencing with space between each and let loose dogs at night.
.
They would just need to feed the dogs.

Not surprised here. Many Jamaicans will thief milk out of coffee. That's the reason why I laugh when I hear the argument, " let's rid ourselves of the old politicians". Don't forget, their replacement will come from the Jamaican society, that were raised under a corrupt system. It's better to work with the evil politicians, and place them under strict public scrutinity, than to take chances with the younger more sophisticated breeds.

Mike Henry seems to be as clueless as they come. In reporting the stolen fuel, Mike was reported to have said " I seek the assistance of the member of Parliament for the area in addressing the problem."
Huh, not a word about seeking assistance from the Rockfort police - Does this infer that the MP has control of the criminal elements responsible for the breakin and stealing the fuel
Well folks here you have another Senior JLP member confirming what we already know.
BTW buses uses Diesel !!
