Traffic fatalities could drop to 240

If weekly fatalities remain at last week's three, 2010 appears well on target to register substantially less than the 341 traffic deaths last year.
Since January 189 people were killed in 174 fatal crashes compared to 238 deaths over the same period last year, resulting from 209 fatal collisions.
With 17 weeks left in the year, the 2010 death toll could top out at 240 if the average three deaths per week continue.
Traffic authorities however routinely remind that road fatalities typically spike during the holiday period at the end of each year.
January and February, with 28 deaths each, have, so far, recorded the highest month fatalities since the start of the year. April had the lowest at 17.
Nineteen people were killed in traffic crashes during July and 21 killed in August, according to police figures.
