Vybz Kartel to spend 30 more days in jail
Saturday, July 10, 2010
DETAINED dancehall act Vybz Kartel has been detained for a further 30 days, a week after he turned himself in to the Greater Portmore Police Station.
Kartel's five-day detention order came to an end yesterday, but was extended a day earlier, on Thursday, when he was served papers informing of his further detention, attorney Christian Tavares-Finson told the Observer.
Tavares-Finson, however, said that the legal team would be seeking the entertainer's release at the Emergency Powers Review Tribunal, set up in the wake of the May 23 State of Public Emergency to combat criminals loyal to accused drug lord and former Tivoli Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
"We will be going to the tribunal to get him released," Tavares-Finson said.
Tavares-Finson said the legal team was preparing papers to secure a hearing on Monday.
Kartel was detained last week Friday and underwent intense questioning some three days after the police named him and five other men as major persons of interest.
The artiste, whose given name is Adijah Palmer, was questioned in relation to criminal gangs in Portmore, St Catherine.
Due to the extension of his detention, the artiste will now miss several bookings, both local and overseas, including the annual summer show Reggae Sumfest due to start on July 17.
When Kartel turned himself in last week, his detention was extended from 24 hours to five days.

The police should release Kartel as a matter of urgency, if their is evidence that he has broken the law or commited crime...he should be charged and given the opportunity to defend the allegations in court. This is the wrong approach with regards to upholding law and order....abuse of power. Hype talk is not a crime. and i haven't heard he was glorifying state terrorism. The police need to review their approach in crime fighting.

The state of emergency is the best policy to occur in Jamaica in many years. Gunmen & their supporters are under the microscope, and this is great. 1,680 people were killed in 2009, and that needs to brought under control.

Some of us here are innocent, yet suffers under the hands of the police and the gov.., then who is really our protector?

The full circle is now at you badman Kartel. This nonsense in the society must come to an end. Stay in there and reflect on who you are and concurrently enrich the lawyers.

Take your medicine son. You did boast that you were a "gansta".

Mr Kartel violent lyrics and bad man image does not warrant an extension of 30 days in a detention center. I hope the police do have something concrete on him as this action is view as basic human rights abuse in many circles. And its not only Kartel but all the other men held there.

this is gross injustice. if they had anything on him he would have been charged long long ago. this experience is what it means to be a citizen of jamaica. pity we dont hear bruce defending anyone elses human rights. this is 1 of the reasons why people will never like jamaican police. then when some of them die under certain circumstances people are abusive when not everyone is sorry for them. imagine how many ordinary jamaican youth go through this? maybe its time for another agana barrett.

We know that Kartel is being questioned by the police who is now in the process of trying to stamp out gangs and criminality in the country. What we dont know is the level of corporation the police investigators are receiving from Kartel in his intorogations. Could it be that the DJ has some actionable info that could assist the police but has decided not to come clean and cough it up? could that be on advice of his lawyer? but why would he not want help us clean house? just wondering.

Why let him out at all? This guy is a "artiste"! please.

Why lock up Kartel on suspicion of anything, when for years we suspected coke to be the mastermind of the criminal world? Is it because Kartel is perceived to be a supporter of the oppositon party? If there is no reason to hold the man then free him. He is a high profile person, therefore he is easily recognisable to the public. The state of emergency will do more damage than good at the end of the day. People are suffering, not just Kartel, but a lot of people.
