What should men avoid doing when their women are at the stage of a volcanic explosion? It's not only the words “calm down” that will get women riled up more, but a host of other utterings.

Never tell her to relax

When you are telling her she needs to relax, you are telling her she needs to shut up and listen to you which in her view is you telling her she has no right to voice her feelings.

It is never wise to downplay a woman's emotions, but when she is angry, it is best to avoid telling her to relax.

Avoid asking her if it's that time of the month

This will probably exacerbate the issue. It will send the message that what she is saying means absolutely nothing to you, and you think that she operates on emotions only.

Don't say sorry just to end the conversation

A woman will know when you are trying to cut her off in the middle of her expressing her feelings and that can make the situation worse. No one likes to feel like their feelings are unimportant.

Don't tune her out

The best way to handle a woman in an argument is to listen, and after she is through expressing herself, then come to a mutual understanding. Don't tune her out, as that is you saying that her views are not important to you.
