KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness a short while ago announced the appointment of Senator Pearnel Charles Jr as Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation (MEGJC).

Holness made the announcement on Twitter.

Charles, who was state minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, will work closely with the prime minister on the housing and infrastructure portfolio.

His appointment follows last week's dismissal of Ruel Reid, which left a vacancy for one Senator in the Cabinet.

The Jamaican Constitution dictates that no fewer than two and no more than four members of the Cabinet should be appointed from the Senate.

In the meantime, Karl Samuda was assigned to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information following Reid's dismissal.

The prime minister is conducting an administrative review of the ministry.

He maintains oversight of the Education, Youth and Information portfolio as the administrative and governance review continues.
