VIDEO: BIKERS’ FEST A BURNOUT

BY JARMILA JACKSON Observer writer

Friday, December 23, 2011

BUCCANEER Jerk Centre, in Llandrumney Square, Port Maria was transformed into a stage to showcase a scorching two- and four-wheel excitement last Sunday at the 3rd annual 'Bikers Burnout'.

The track was a mixture of gravel, dirt and concrete which guaranteed the highly expected extra dusty skids from some of the best riders and drivers in Jamaica.

A bounce-a-bout as well as a trampoline and train rides kept the kids occupied, while hundreds of motorsports fans who had come from all over the island to see the dexterity and stunt champions in gravity-defying action were not disappointed.

"This staging of 'Bikers Burnout' was much better than the previous one, because there was a much bigger turnout and the drivers and riders got a chance to perform at a high standard. As a matter of fact, we are very pleased with the quality of entertainment and skill here today," said Walter Dawson, event organiser of 50 Promotions.

Those who were up to the challenge of dominating the obstacle course included 'Drifters' Randall Singh, Sanjay Singh, Kingsley Scott, Cleve 'Cutta Hype' Ottey, Dennis Bicarie, Richard Rose, Richard Rerrie, Maurice Whittingham, Ameer Johnson, Ronald Thompson, as well as Ian Wright, with his "Big Red Truck".

But the driver who stole the show was Maurice 'Worl' Boss' Whittingham of 'Team Mad Dem' with his Toyota Starlet. He emerged victorious with the fastest time overall (1:14 secs) and got an award for the "sickest trick".

"Victory has a lot to do with car control. It's not about driving fast; it's about knowing and understanding your vehicle and what gives you most control. To be a consistent winner you have to pay attention to all those factors," said multiple dexterity champion Maurice Whittingham.

After completing his final run of the course — with multiple 360s — Whittingham returned to the "skid pad" — a small concrete area of the course designed for manoeuvring around the cones, set up to provide a special treat for the spectators.

With teammate Ameer Johnson standing in the middle of the "skid pad" — reminiscent of a scene from a magic show — Whittingham picked up Johnson at mid-360. In no time, the two switched positions, with Johnson ending up as the driver and Whittingham appearing from a cloud of dust and smoke standing in the middle of the course. The crowd cheered wildly.

In-between the dexterity competitions, bikers from the 'Rush Riders' and 'Crazy Bikers' crews kept the crowd entertained. The likes of stunt bikers Gichie, Cutta, Mad Dog and Oraine turned up the heat, popping daring 'burnouts', 'wheelies', 'endos', 'high chairs' and other stunts that had members of the crowd holding their breath, until the bikes were once again safely on the ground.

Prizes for the 'sickest trick', 'best endo' and 'best burnout' were among those presented to the bikers.
