DRAG and circuit racing enthusiasts will journey to Jamwest Speedway in Westmoreland this Sunday, June 24, to witness the season's third drag meet and the birth of Jamaica's second circuit racing track.

Starting at 8 am, the event, dubbed 'Circuit Time' will see alternating runs between fuel-pumped drag racers and circuit racers eager to test the new track.

"It goes without saying that this will completely ramp up the motorsports activity in the West. Jamwest now coming on line will enhance all of the developments and improvements we have had in circuit racing in the last six years," said Dean Corrodus, chairman of Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club.

"The Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) has led the way with revamping Dover and putting it on the front burner. We've had tremendous exposure for all motorsports disciplines in Jamaica and circuit racing is on top," he continued.

According to Corrodus, the spanking new 1.8-mile circuit features a half-mile, front straight, seven corners and is between 40- and 60-feet wide. Drivers will comply with the standard JRDC circuit racing rules, specifications, classes (MP1-MP4) and technical regulations that they are used to competing under at Dover Raceway.

Among the drivers to battle head-to-head in the drag meet on Sunday will be racing sensation Dean Shaw, who will be competing in both the drag and circuit races. For the circuit he will be armed with his 2007 Prochallenger Truck, for the drag meet, his 1969 1500 horsepower Chevy Camaro. Peter Wilson, Dean Corrodus and George Bayley are also set to test the track.

Shaw, who plans to once again take home a victory in the eight-second class shared his excitement with Auto.

"I think it's a great idea to expand the capabilities at Jamwest. It has the potential to become a large motorsports park and if you like motor racing you'll enjoy that. There are several different things that can be done there as well; go karting, sprinting and drifting included. Though, I must say my heart is really in drag and circuit racing. There are so few Dover meets per year so I'm happy for any opportunity to go out there and drive," said Shaw.

Qualifying and practice runs for the event will be done on Saturday though late entrants will still be able to get a practice run before competing on Sunday. The two disciplines will run alternately throughout the day culminating in the exhibition circuit races.
