T'WAS a gathering of specially invited guests at Wednesday's media launch of the 2018 Audi Q5 at ATL Automotive's Audi terminal on Oxford Road in St Andrew.During his presentation, Damien Kerr — Audi's head of business — requested that the vehicle be unveiled much to the delight of the eagerly anticipating onlookers.

“This launch is one of the most significant and eagerly anticipated in many years. Audi is one of the world's, and Jamaica's best loved and most progressive brands, and the Q5 is its best-selling model. It's sold over 1.6 million units worldwide since its first introduction in 2008,” Kerr told Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

“This premium mid-size SUV stormed into the market and has quickly become Jamaica's best-loved premium SUV. Since 2010, some 500 units have been sold in Jamaica, making the Audi Q5 not only the best-selling mid-sized SUV in the premium segment, but the best-selling luxury SUV in Jamaica. What's more: the range of features that the Q5 has, such as quattro with ultra technology, powerful TFSI engine and air suspension, makes it almost custom-made for Jamaica,” he continued.

The new Q5's structural design emphasises power and strength. It features include a 3D aluminium-look radiator grille, LED daytime running lights, and and LED rear lights in the progressive Q-design with dynamic turn signals that pulsate. It boasts Audi Matrix LED headlights.

The second-generation Q5 is more spacious and 198.4 lb lighter, as well as 1.3 inch longer.

The “perfect Q's” 2.0 TFSI engine produces 252 horse power (than the previous model) and driven by a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission. The SUV has 370 Nm of torque and moves from 0-100 km in 6.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 237 km/h.

In its drive assistance systems, the new Audi tops its segment with a broad range of high-tech options. In their intelligent interplays, the systems represent a next step towards piloted driving. They are bundled into three — tour, city and parking.

The predictive efficiency assistance helps the driver to save fuel by specific information on the car's surrounding. Distance warning alerts the driver when the distance to a vehicle drops below a safe space.

“Adaptive air suspension becomes available in the Q5 for the first time, making it more comfortable, more agile and sporty... This allows the driver to raise or lower the ride height at the touch of a button; the first on a mid-size luxury SUV,” said Kerr.

The new Audi Q5 starts at $9.
