Porsche marks Jamaican milestone

GEORGE Wills, president and managing director of Porsche Latin America, Inc, labelled Porsche's coming to Jamaica as a milestone.He was speaking at the opening of Porsche's City Centre showroom in New Kingston, last Saturday.

“This is a major milestone. We're very proud to be here. We think the timing is right for us to be here and I think that we'll enjoy great success from this marriage. Our product range is great for the environment and based on feedback we've had tonight, there are a lot of excited people about the brand being here, so it kind a rubber-stamps the fact that we got it right coming to Jamaica when we did,” he told Jamaica Observer's Auto magazine.

The high-performance German sports car has been racking up some milestones on the international scene as well.

They registered a six per cent jump in sales last year when compared to 2015, and delivered a total of 237,778 units.

“Our strong product range has enabled us to once again exceed the high levels from the previous year,” said Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG. “Porsche is synonymous with emotion and quality. The positive trend in the global markets confirms how enthusiastic our customers are.”

However, he added that exclusivity is more important to Porsche than sales targets.

Wills gave another perspective.

“We're an engineering company that perfects what we do. Every car we build starts as a sports car, so whether you're driving a Macan, Cayenne or a Panamera, it has a sports car DNA... They are tested almost to the point of destruction. And if you look at it today, 75 per cent of every Porsche ever produced is still driving on the road today, which tells you of the build quality of these vehicles. So we have fantastic build quality, we got sports car DNA, we got this tremendous history .... so this is quite unique to the brand.”

“Regardless of which Porsche you prefer, each embodies sports car fascination... over 30,000 race victories in every motorsport category... from endurance racing to Formula One to world-rally championships make our brand the most successful in world motorsport. The success does not happen by chance,” said Wills.

As dealers of the brand, Adam Stewart, CEO of ATL Automotive, shared what this meant for his company.

“It takes us to the next level; Porsche will sit at the top of the premium segment and have products that are unmatched. No two Porsches coming to Jamaica will be the same car. They are completely individual and completely bespoke in their options and features you can order. It signals ATL is here for the long haul.
