IT may not have been the desired number of participants, but the recent Jamaica Off Road Challenge (JORC) Ultimate Adventure Safari outing was big on excitement for the six thrill seekers who showed up. “We had a low turnout because of the inclement weather in the days leading up to the event. A lot of people didn't want to risk their rides or didn't think the event would happen at all,” Craig Powell, event organiser, told Jamaica Observer's weekly Auto magazine.

The Ultimate Adventure Safari had originally been planned as a two-day event, with overnight camping in Jackson Bay, Clarendon. Instead, Powell condensed the affair into a one-day trek.

“The plan was to scout the route the Thursday before, but the rain put a stop to that,” he said.

Undaunted, Powell and willing few took on route with no advance knowledge of the conditions. This led to an adrenaline-filled occasion as the small convoy, who met in May Pen, Clarendon, spent the day traversing the rain-wrecked terrain. They had to use their wits to overcome multiple natural obstacles — some as simple as overgrown brush to more serious water-soaked sand tracks.

Powell said that JORC's aim is to host a scavenger hunt and obstacle course event in the coming months.
