Bevenisha Moodie, rapporteur — Keeping track of who said what

When the various local government agencies hold plenaries, meetings, sessions and conferences with international agencies or government bodies, somebody has to keep track of who said what and what they meant by what was said, and if what was said can be agreed upon by all parties and what steps should happen next.

Quite a bit to keep track of and it is not the function of the event planner or even the media. Hence the need for rapporteur services. defines the rapporteur as “a person whose job is to do research and present official reports on a particular subject”.

After completing her MBA, Bevenisha Moodie realised that while international bodies such as the United Nations and the European Union had rapporteurs as official parts of the decision-making process, Jamaica did not.

And so, she started Montage Management Consultancy to offer this needed service.

Dennise Williams (DW): Tell us exactly, how did you get started? How did you become aware of the lack of rapporteur services in Jamaica?

Bevenisha Moodie: In my previous life I was personal assistant to a few ministers of Government which provided considerable exposure to conference coordination and event planning. I decided to incorporate my company, Montage Management Consultancy Limited, when I discovered that a number of these conferences had no one assigned to capture the salient information — that is, discussion points, recommendations and criticisms — that could be used for decision-making purposes. I was always interested in writing and editing, and so I decided to eke out a living by doing what came naturally to me, which was to generate reports

DW: Since starting your team has been a part of a number of legislative activities. Can you share one that stands out the most?

BM: The most memorable conference is definitely the Fourth UN Cross Regional Meeting for Advancing the Protection of Children from Violence, which was convened in Jamaica for the first time. However, legislatively, I am happy to have worked on the (former) Child Development Agency's National Children's Summit that gives children in State care an opportunity to share their opinion and thereby influence the policies that directly affect them.

DW: How does your team structure work?

BM: I am blessed with a pool of technically competent individuals who I can pull from to act as part-time assistant rapporteur's. Once an organisation makes contact, negotiations begin to determine the most effective number of assistant rapporteurs needed for that event (for example: conference, symposium, workshop, etc). I also use the services of graphic artists for graphical representations and have also retained the services of an accountant.

DW: Why has Jamaica taken so long to adopt the process of utilising rapporteur services?

BM: Many organisations are not aware that these services are available and especially how useful professionally produced reports are to the decision-making process.

DW: If someone wants to get into this field, what training is necessary?

BM: A minimum of a bachelor's degree, good grammar and good grasp of the English language, exceptional listening and interpretation skills, and competency in Microsoft Office suite.

DW: How does being part of the Small Business Association of Jamaica help your company?

BM: There are so many benefits that Montage Management Consultancy Limited has experienced since becoming a member of the SBAJ. As an active member there are networking opportunities, tremendous exposure to clients and other professionals, and the opportunity for new businesses and partnerships to be formed.

DW: And where do you see Montage Management Consultancy Limited five years from now?

BM: Moving out of my home office into a permanent, easily accessible location with full-time staff offering additional business support services.
