Chukka invests US$4-million in new tours for Trelawny

Chukka Caribbean Adventures officially opened new features to its 2,000-acre sugar plantation and riverside attraction at Good Hope in Trelawny last week, representing a US$4-million investment made over a year and a half.

The new adventure park includes a 300-foot water slide, a 50-foot waterfall, and a river walk area along a section of the Martha Brae.

The latest segment, which is the third phase of development of the property just outside of the historic town of Falmouth, is projected to welcome twice the more than 70,000 visitors it now sees annually.

The latest phase of the development is a welcome addition to the Good Hope Great House tour, which already includes ATV, dune buggy, zipline, river tubing, kayak and culinary tours, along with a challenge course, bird aviary, pool, Walkerswood Jerk Centre, and Appleton Rum Tasting Experience.

It is the latest in an ongoing build-out of Chukka's 10 Jamaican attractions and overseas locations in the Turks and Caicos Islands and Belize.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer John Byles says the profit share arrangement with landowners has served to achieve the company's objective of showcasing the best properties and natural attractions in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean.

He added that the model was important to ensure that the product remains relevant in the eyes and experiences of the customers.

The Melville family owns some 80 per cent of the business, with Pan-Jam Investments having bought a 20 per cent stake in the business some years ago.

“We have good partners in the Blaze Hart, Alexander Melville, Marc Melville, Jennifer Griffith, Dr Horace Chang, Danny Melville, John Byles, landowners and the banks that we use, and they have been supportive as we continue to grow,” Byles said.

The third phase of the nature, adventure and historical development at Good Hope, which first opened its doors in 2011, was showcased to Jamaican and overseas travel agents, tour operators and journalists last Tuesday night as the curtains came down on Jamaica Product Exchange 2017.
