Process and procedures for clearing human remains

The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) wishes to advise the public of the following procedures for clearing the remains of deceased relatives being sent from overseas.

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

• Death Certificate

• Affidavit from the funeral home (signed by a certified embalmer from the country where the death took place)

• Cremation certificate

• Letter from the Health Department in the country where the death took place, stating that there were no communicable diseases at the time.

• Permit from the Regulatory Authority — Public Health Department in Jamaica.

 

Please note — the remains will be released on the presentation of these documents.

 

PROCEDURES

• Corpse must be secured in a sealed coffin

• Death certificate and permit must be presented to the Customs Officer at the airport

• Corpse will be examined by police and Customs Officers before clearance is given.

The JCA continues to appeal to consignees who have not yet collected the remains (urns) of their loved ones to contact: Queen's Warehouse, Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), telephone (876) 932-7183/7111; Queen's Warehouse, Sangster International Airport (SIA) at (876) 971-5227 to make arrangements to collect the urns.
