Caricom to revise regional air service agreement
Friday, July 02, 2010
JOHN Lewis, transportation specialist at the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Secretariat, says a concerted effort is now being made to revise a multi-lateral air service agreement within Caricom.
This agreement was signed prior to the signing of the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas in T&T, in 2001. He said the objective is to bring the agreement in conformity with the revised treaty, adding that the air service agreement was signed by most, but not all the member states of Caricom.
Lewis was making a presentation at a panel discussion at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) conference, on June 28, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, in Montego Bay, St James. The panel discussion addressed the topic: 'Regional Approach in air Transport Liberalisation', during which presenters from Brazil, South Africa, Bahrain and Spain shared their experiences within their respective regions.
"The revised treaty takes the (Caricom) community to a higher standard in terms of establishing a single market for services, and it is in fact within the transport sector that the liberalisation is not quite completed, and there is a process now of trying to revise the multilateral air service agreement, so that it can be in conformity with the revised treaty," Lewis said.
