New 34 MW wind farm signs supply deal with JPS
KINGSTON, Jamaica –Having signed a 20-year power supply deal with Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) today (June 24), BMR Energy plans to start construction of its US$90-million, 34 megawatt (MW) wind farm by year end.
The project, which is scheduled for completion in September 2015, when the wind-power electricity generation facility will be connected to the grid, is expected to reduce oil imports by 250,000 to 300,000 barrels a year. That could conceivably cut Jamaica’s oil bill by US$25 million each year.
It also is expected to lower emissions of carbon dioxide by two million tonnes and nitrous oxide by 7,000 tons annually, which is equivalent to eliminating the greenhouse gases given off by over 800,000 passenger vehicles each year.
The wind farm is to be located along a ridge line just west of JPS’s 3 MW wind farm at Munro, St Elizabeth.
