Fifty-five new students across the five campuses of The University of the West Indies (UWI) have been awarded Open Scholarships for the 2019/2020 academic year, the university has announced.

The scholars are from Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago. They are pursuing studies across the faculties of law, medical sciences, humanities and education, social sciences, food and agriculture, science and technology, and engineering.

UWI describes the Open Scholarship as the most sought after among the regional awards administered by its Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies (OBUS). Recipients receive full tuition fees and miscellaneous charges, hall fees for on- campus accommodation or US$2,000 towards off-campus accommodation, a book allowance of US$500, and a meal allowance of US$2,000.

The scholarship is awarded based on high academic achievement in Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate or Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination, an associate's degree, or for existing UWI students, completion of year one with a high GPA. In addition to superior gardes, students submit an essay as part of the application process.

The online application for the 2020-2021 year opens in December this year and will run until April 30, 2020. The scholarship application period coincides with the application for entry to general undergraduate programmes. To qualify, applicants must be nationals of UWI member countries or territories and must pursue government-sponsored undergraduate degrees.

The UWI Open Scholarship is funded by the university's 17 contributing countries or territories on an annual basis.
