Some of the most popular fashion careers include:

Fashion Illustrator

Fashion illustrators work with designers to create conceptual sketches and illustrations of fashion products, including clothing, shoes and accessories. They also produce advertising copy and images for promotional material in print and online.

Fashion Visual Merchandiser - (Average salary in the US: $44,060)

Visual merchandisers main duties are to develop, create and implement in-store displays and other store visuals. The displays must be aesthetically appealing to entice customers to check out and ultimately purchase the store's products. The more visually appealing the store, the more consumers they will attract, resulting in a more profitable company.

Garment Technologist

Garment technologists work on the design and development of new materials through testing new combinations of yarns, textiles and fibres. They also look at ways to improve production techniques to be more efficient. Quality control and investigative work are central to the role.

Fashion Writer/Journalist (Average salary in the US: $49,899)

Fashion writers produce editorial copy for media outlets such as fashion magazines, newspapers, fashion and design websites and as well as blogs and for television. The majority of fashion writers work within editorial departments of fashion design companies. Those who specialise in designer or catwalk reviews will usually tend to submit articles on a freelance basis.

Fashion writers search for their own stories and pair them with professional portraits of designers, models, celebrities and anyone else who makes up fashion's inner circle. After developing these stories, they will then pitch them to chief editors or other fashion media buyers like Vogue or Cosmopolitan.

Fashion Stylist (Average salary in the US: $50,364)

Fashion stylists are responsible for making people look good. They usually work on photo shoots, commercials, film and television sets, music videos, print advertisements, style models and celebrities and help the photographer's and the director's vision come to life. Fashion stylists need to emulate the customer's personality and style through the clothes, wardrobes or outfits they are wearing.

Fashion Public Relations - Average Salary: $50,738

The role of a public relations representative in this industry is to put the face of client companies out in the world as fashion designers, stores and boutiques strive to stay relevant by creating the latest fashions for the time. PR specialists handle everything from media to investors relations to helping to preserve a company's reputation and to increase profitability. PR reps are in charge of maintaining a brand's image and making sure that people are talking about it. Their job is to make a brand seem appealing and keep your brand alive.

Fashion Designer (Average salary in the US: $54,339

Fashion designers create everything from dresses and shoes to suits and hats. They may create clothing for the masses or for a niche group of fashionistas. Some fashion designers have the techniques to design in all fashion categories, although some prefer to specialise in only one area. Some design menswear exclusively, while others may specialise in women's handbags.

Designers are required to be multi-talented. They sketch, sew, create and mix colours, research upcoming fashion trends, choose fabrics and also utilise computer-aided design as well as, design entire lines.
