The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus is now accepting applications for what it describes as a groundbreaking online course in transformational leadership designed to equip Caribbean leaders and technical managers in the public, private, civil society and development sectors to implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs) for the region.

The programme, which is scheduled to begin on January 22, 2018, offers a certificate in transformational leadership.

It is being offered in partnership with PEMANDU Associates of Malaysia, the Caribbean Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme.

The short-term Continuing and Professional Education 40-hour course covers core elements from the field of leadership, results-based management, sustainable development, and the execution of inter-sectoral projects in support of SDGs, the university said.

“We signed off on this partnership in September, and already this remarkable course is bearing fruit,” remarked pro vice-chancellor and principal of the Open Campus Dr Luz Longsworth. “The UWI Open Campus is delighted to offer the course online, and we are excited at the prospect of equipping the region's leaders to implement the SDGs as we take significant steps towards ensuring that we meet the 2030 Goals,” he said.

According to the university, the course brings together the expertise of The UWI faculty and the specialised knowledge and practical experience of PEMANDU Associates by going beyond the 'what' of the SDG agenda to focus more specifically on building technical capacity around the 'how'. It focuses on:

• Maximising limited resources (human, financial, institutional, etc) of Small Islands Developing States;

• Managing the process of operationalising the SDGs; and

• Building a culture committed to the 'discipline of execution' through systematic goal setting, identification of indicators, monitoring, reporting and re-alignment of strategy and resources.
