Clean street competition
Cops On Patrol

Thursday, November 11, 2004

The Maxfield Square Neighbourhood Watch has launched its yearly "Clean Street Competition" under the theme, "How can we keep our community clean?". The competition is organised by Mrs Jean Samuels, project coordinator who sees the project as a means of keeping the community clean, and also to motivate residents.

The criteria for the competition are:
. Beautification of gateways
. Painting gate walls
. Painting sidewalks where necessary
. Fixing old zinc fences
. Bushing gateways.

Speaking to Cops on Patrol, Mrs Samuels says the project is designed for residents to feel a sense of pride in their community. She believes that by keeping the community clean it will be a morale booster and will help residents to identify with their physical environment. Mrs Samuels believes that a clean environment will see a ricocheted effect in residents' attitudes and behaviour, as they will feel good within themselves.

Participating streets are Berwick Road, Galloway Road, Pretoria Road, Oliver Crescent, Berwick Lane and Glen Road. There will be a trophy for the cleanest street and prizes for the second and third place winners. Prizes will also be awarded to people who have maintained their gateway from the previous year.

Judging of the competition and award ceremony will be held on December 18, starting at 4:00 pm at the Pretoria Road United Church, 10 Pretoria Road, Kingston 13.
The Maxfield Square Neighbourhood Watch was launched on June 14, 1992.
