Dear Editor,

The Sunday Observer article of October 21, 2018, 'Doctor treats man who tried to kill her' contains false allegations about me as the then Member of Parliament.

The article about Dr Jerlene Brown alleged, “…so they said I should see the Member of Parliament in Portland. At that time it was Dr Donald Rhodd…”

First, allow me to commend Dr Brown for her resilience, hard work and dedication which enabled her to graduate as a medical doctor after experiencing all of the previous challenges described in the article. She is surely an example to young people who would like to pursue their dreams as professionals against significant setbacks. I wish for her God's richest blessings as she pursues her preferred career path.

Secondly, let me state for the record that I have no knowledge of the allegations made against me by her while she sought assistance, allegedly at my office, while I was the Member of Parliament for Portland Eastern. Unfortunately, the secretary whom she allegedly spoke to is now deceased and is in no position to agree with or deny her allegations.

Thirdly, I received none of the several letters which she allegedly delivered to my office.

Fourthly, my main responsibility while I worked in Government was youth and children. Youth and children development activities occupy most of the time I spend now outside of my professional work as a medical doctor. It is my passion. I would, therefore, have seen it an honour to assist and serve another Jamaican seeking to pursue a career in medicine had I been made aware of her plight.

Fifthly, it has never been and will never be my practice to ask individuals to lie about my whereabouts. I was never a Member of Parliament to hide from my constituents. If that were so I would not have been able to win three consecutive elections, retiring with an average margin of victory of approximately 2,000 votes.

Sixthly, I am extremely disappointed with the Sunday Observer for not calling me to get my side of the story before publishing the article. The article, in my opinion, was a good one, save and except for the bashing of a former Member of Parliament with the stated allegations which cannot be proven.

Dr Donald Rhodd

Former Member of Parliament

Portland Eastern
