Dear Editor,

I was disappointed that the Government of Jamaica capitulated to the threats to have aid cut off by United States of America President Donald J Trump and his Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and abstained on the Jerusalem vote recently at the UN General Assembly.

I don't know how the Government is going to explain its passive support for President Trump's international muck-up to the Jamaican people.

There was no need to give in. The purpose of foreign aid is not simply benevolence for the recipient, it is rather a route to gaining influence in terms of trade, investment, assistance in the fight against terrorism, and voting support.

It is more for the benefit of the giver rather than the receiver.

The threat to cut aid was a bluff by the US, and President Trump knows that there is China, Russia, and even Iran waiting in the wings to take America's place as chief foreign direct investor to strengthen ties across the globe.

No doubt, the supporters of the Trump move — whether active support or passive like us — will be wined and dined by the US as 'payback' for its support, while the Palestinians in Jerusalem continue to suffer under an apartheid-like system that has been imposed on them. It's all very disappointing that Jamaica voted — or not — the way it did.
