Keep your pity now, Golding

A news report on January 29 indicated that former Prime Minister Bruce Golding is concerned for graduates earning low wages, despite having qualifications.

I'm going to ask Golding to sign his pity on the dying kind, because when he and friend P J Patterson were running yesteryear monopolies no policy was put in place to standardise employees' earnings, especially in the private sector.

What he is seeing now is employers paying people what they feel, with little regard for qualifications and wringing pound (s) of flesh, plus tax, from workers. Additionally, the sneaky devils like to implement illegal ad hoc policies, throw baseless tantrums, and take employees' rights for a joyride at their expense.

Often there is no (current) company policy to guide employees to be assured there's accurate knowledge and to find appropriate defence in law from these unscrupulous business operators when needed.

The multiplicity of cases in which qualifications have nothing to do with one's earnings in this country is rife. Sometimes it's what the prospect is willing to do or take.

If Golding truly wanted us to manage the issue he should have put measures in place for a solid, non-interference remuneration, when he could, to have graduates not flee for better prospects overseas, so as to make Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families, and do business.

For people like myself with a degree and earning what was referred to as “mind-blowingly low wages”, it's not our fault and we can do without his pity.
