That's what white evangelical Christianity has become

Dear Editor,

I must say that it was a brilliant article written by Rev Raulston Nembhard in the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, titled 'No evangelical outrage for the agony of the Palestinian people'.

My friend, that's what white evangelical Christianity has become today in America.

1. White (less black or brown), but mainly white Republican males, and mainly older Christian zealots, are the majority supporters of Donald Trump.

2. White evangelical Christians are obsessed with cultural issues, eg same-sex marriage, abortion, immigration, gun rights, exclusion of the poor, sick and needy from the social and political space, and favour muscular militarism, and America First (or only) policies.

3. White evangelical leaders can only talk religious militancy, but Trump, as their president (albeit of dubious moral character) and standard-bearer — has the power to do their bidding.

4. The racist policies and anti-Palestinian actions of Israeli hardliners are in sync with white evangelical Christian beliefs. Because these white evangelical Christians believe that Judaeo-Christian values are the only true dogmas and that those who don't hold these doctrines must be swept aside.

5. US President Donald Trump, now in the 21st century, becomes the white evangelical saviour (messiah), and plays a similar role to Pope Urban II of the 11th century, who led the first crusade to recapture Jerusalem. Trump now captures Jerusalem from the Palestinians for Israel's political and religious ideologues and their American allies.

6. Modern-day white evangelical Christians have nothing to do with the gospel of love and compassion that, presumably, the Christian founder — Jesus — preached and lived. But, instead, white evangelical Christians, as their scriptures say, are “like dead men's bones in white-washed sepulchres”.
