Dear Editor,

The Jamaica Council for Interfaith Fellowship unequivocally condemns the wanton, unprovoked murder of men, women and children in New Zealand last Friday as they were engaged in the act of worship.

Reprehensible and incomprehensible acts such as these are the product of hatred and xenophobia, the demonising of people regarded as “the other” because they are seen as different from us, whether this difference is on the basis of race, religion, nationality or otherwise.

The religious traditions of the various groups who make up the tapestry that is Jamaica recognise some clear commonalities— as we would have people do to us, we should also do to them; we should strive for justice.

It is the recognition of the unity underlying our diversity that inspired our national motto: “Out of Many, One People.”

The council calls upon all Jamaicans to join us in condemning, in the strongest terms, all such expressions of hate, wherever they occur and whoever the targets may be.

“So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole Earth.”

Stacey E Mitchell

Acting President
