Actor Boy nominee David Tulloch elated at recognition

At age six, David Tulloch was cast by Aston Cooke in a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. From there he made consistent performances in the choir and drama club at high school, officially making his entrance into major productions through the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company(JMTC).

It was the JMTC that opened up Tulloch's palate for classical music, and while his mother played the piano and his grandfather was a great all-round musician, his mastery of the keyboard is self taught. For the past 10 years he has been busy composing and with four Actor Boy Award Nominations for music, he is elated that his work is now being recognised.

"I thank Douglas Prout for using me in these large scale productions so more people can be exposed to the music. I was very much on my own in the past and productions were small scale then," Tulloch stated.

The nominations are for Original Score for the play More Bay Vibes and Original Song for More Bay Vibes, Bless Mo Bay and 4PLAY. Four nominations are quite impressive and Tulloch shared with us his approach to the creative process.

"Well the important thing to remember about creating music is to ask yourself who is listening and what do you want them to hear. Plays are thematic so period and timeline, mood and moments are more important but it must serve a pivotal purpose in the production."

Tulloch is also at the helm of Probemaster Entertainment and his production of 4PLAY received a nod for Best Drama while supporting actors Rodney Campbell and Maliaka Bryce have been nominated for their work in the show. For Tulloch it's the silver lining.

"4PLAY was an interesting experience, all my plans for it fell through and everything practically fell on me. I am happy for the nominations, in particular for the two actors who were nominated. It's encouraging for future projects."

Writer, composer, director, producer...Tulloch wears many hats in the theatre industry. His vision for Probemaster Entertainment is not only to produce more plays, but to provide an opportunity for newcomers like Bryce, Marlon Brown and Candice Tomlinson Minott to showcase their talent. It's his way of continuing the cycle of development.

"Someone took a chance on me too so it's only fair that I give back," he said.

However also shared that in order to improve quality control on future productions he would welcome some assistance. "It's just that sadly it has been a one-man band and I really would like some help with it. Even if it is just one more person, an administrator. This will give me a chance to actually focus more of my attention on the quality of the product," Tulloch explained.
