LOS ANGELES, USA (AFP) -- Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland fell down a rabbit hole and came up a box office winner, garnering $62 million in ticket sales, industry figures showed yesterday.

The live-action, 3-D version of Lewis Carroll's classic fantasy tale starring Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska -- now the top earner for two weeks running -- came in well ahead of second-place finisher Green Zone, which took in US$14.5 million in its debut.

Box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said third place went to just-released romantic comedy She's Out of My League, in which a stunning woman and a dorky guy fall in love. It earned US$9.6 million in sales.

Fourth place went to the debut of the romantic drama, Remember Me, while fifth went to Shutter Island with US$8.1 million in ticket sales.

The interracial romantic comedy, Our Family Wedding, starring America Ferrera of Ugly Betty fame, debuted at sixth place.

Box office juggernaut Avatar, the top-grossing movie of all time, was in seventh place, selling US$6.6 million in movie seats.

With US$4.3 million in ticket sales, eighth place was nabbed by crime drama Brooklyn's Finest, starring Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle as three burnt-out cops transformed by the same violent assignment.

Ninth place went to the police-buddy comedy Cop Out starring Bruce Willis, with $US4.2 million in sales.

The Crazies, about the military's containment of a man-made virus that causes permanent insanity and death, rounded out the top 10, with US$3.7 million in receipts.
