Celebrity soccer match on Sunday

Thursday, July 26, 2012

CONNECTICUT, USA: Several dancehall artistes are scheduled to lace up their boots at the annual celebrity soccer match at Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, on Sunday.

The match — organised by the New York-based Dem Man Yah Entertainment and Bell Powerhouse — will see a Jamaica All-Star artiste team battling a United States All-Star team for the Jamaica 50th Independence Cup.

"We have always hosted the event at a venue in the Bronx or Brooklyn in New York. This year, as part of our Jamaica 50 celebrations in the Diaspora, we decided to do it in Connecticut as a sign of gratitude for the loyal support we have received from the large and growing Jamaican population that now lives there," said Dougie Laughman from Dem Man Yah Promotions.

The US All-Star team includes: DJ Roy; Dubb Master Chris from Irie Jam Radio; Brother Gary of WLIB radio; veteran Jamaican footballer Douglas Bell, selectors Jagga B and Glama Wayne, Chris Chin of VP Records; and, DJ Red Fox.

The Jamaican contingent comprises: Junior Kelly; Christopher Martin, Delly Ranks, Twin of Twins, Frisco Kid, Mad Cobra, Captain Barkey, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Macka Diamond.

The organisers have also called on veteran sound system selector Sky Juice to spearhead the attack for the Jamaica All-Stars team from the bench.

With Jamaicans in the diaspora pumped up about the Olympics Games, event organisers have included a special 50-metre sprint as an added attraction.

Confirmed to compete are selector Sky Juice who will battle Pretty Boy Floyd while Whistleman will go up against radio host Brother Gary.

"We are urging everyone to wear your Jamaican colours and bring your flags to the celebrity soccer match as we celebrate Jamaica 50 this year," said Laughman.
