The sounds of the African continent are set to explode on stage at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Performing Arts at the UWI, Mona, today.

Dancer, percussionist and Grammy Award-winning singer Dobet Gnahoré of the Ivory Coast is expected to bring the spirit of that continent to the concert being organised by the Alliance Française in Jamaica.

Director of the Alliance Amandine Poret says Gnahoré represents the young generation or African artistes, and is considered to be one of Africa's most exciting new talents.

The Ivorian performer will be supported by her band of musicians from the Cameroon, Belgium and France. She performs in a range of African languages in genres from Mandigue melodies to Congolese rumba, Ghanian high-life and Zulu choir compositions.

In addition the strengthening the cultural bonds which run through Jamaica, Africa and France, and the promotion of Francophone cultures, the concert is also seen as an homage to the International Year for People of African Descent.

Gnahoré, who is the daughter of master percussionist Boni Gnahoré, won a prestigious Grammy Award in the Category Best Urban/ Alternative Performance for her collaboration with American neo-soul singer India.Arie on the track Pearls, which was originally made popular by singer Sade.
