Hi-tech studio coming - Red Bull pumps $25 million into facility
Red Bull moves to support young artistes
Sunday, December 05, 2010
Energy drink Red Bull is constructing a modern $25 million recording studio and loft in Kingston in order to enter the local music industry by early 2011.
The Haining Road-based studio should open in February and allow the brand to make marketing inroads by linking lifestyle and music. Total expenditure represents construction and equipment costs, management said in response to the Sunday Observer's queries.
"It represents a substantial investment. It is very modern and environmentally friendly studio," stated William Mahfood, head of Wisynco, which distributes the drink locally and will operate the studio on behalf of the label. "Something like this has never been done in Jamaica especially providing such an opportunity for young artistes."
The studio and apartment concept parallels that of Geejam Studios in Portland but Red Bull will not rent studio time.
"They will not sell studio time but offer it on an invitation basis for free. Also in some cases they will set up collaborations with international artistes," stated Mahfood.
Red Bull already operates an international label and the studio in Jamaica follows sister studios in New Zealand, the UK and the US.
"They decided to build a studio in Jamaica because Kingston represents the music heartbeat of the region," he argued.
The local studio will boost modern design that utilises natural lighting, offering a full range recording capabilities.
"It will be a full recording studio, have dwelling facilities, and also have a live-house," he explained. "This will support the community by linking music and lifestyle and expose new talent to state of the art equipment along with international stars," Mahfood added.

IF continue to Invest in one area alone then the growth of the country won't be balance North Coast is not the only place can attract investors. Kingston can also do the same. But for me i wish they would have gone to orange street down town to make that investment because it was that road back in the 50's 60's, 70's and 80's that give birth or carry the strong legacy of Reggae music and we need to build that back. History for this country are worth billions of dollar.

i think what red bull is doing is indeed a good thing, i've been saying for some time now that more companies should invest in jamaica, in response to Danny's comment, most artists are not from kingston, they have to travel there because thats where the studios are located.

I disagree Werdna. The larger bulk of recording will be done by locals and that concentration is in Kingston. So great marketing move on Wysinco's part. After all the Red Bull product has been receiving several free plugs in the music lately, why not give back to the industry.

Very nice Red Bull, but don't you think the North Coast (Montego Bay) the Tourist Mecca of the Caribbean needs a state of the art Recording Studio? What could be greater than a ocean view and Caribbean Sunset from a vocal booth. That's how I would invest 25 Million if I want to attract international recording artistes and make mind blowing music and productions....
