CEBERT 'Jackie' Bernard, a member of rock steady group The Kingstonians, died Sunday morning at the Kingston Public Hospital.

His sister, Monica Bernard-Kelly, told Splash that he died from pneumonia. Jackie Bernard was 66.

Bernard fell on hard times in the 1990s and his health had deteriorated considerably in the last decade.

The Kingstonians, which also included Bernard's older brother Lloyd, emerged during the rocksteady era of the mid to late 1960s. They first recorded for J J Johnson who produced the trio's breakthrough hit, Winey Winey, in 1966.

Their biggest hit was Singer Man, produced by Derrick Harriott in 1972. Co-written by Bernard and Harriott, that song has been covered by American rock band Three Dog Night and British reggae group UB40.

Bernard went solo in the 1970s, and recorded for several producers. He is survived by his sister.
