MISS Teen Jamaica finals take place at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston, St Andrew, this evening at 8:00 pm.

Fourteen contestants are vying for scholarships valued at $1,000,000, courtesy of the University College of the Caribbean, as well as a trip to the United States.

"There are some very outstanding girls in this year's competition," said Janet Sinclair, founder of the 33-year-old contest.

She was quick to point out that the competition was not a beauty contest.

"The girls are judged on intellegence, talent, discipline, grooming, the practice of Christianity, and congeniality," Sinclair told the Jamaica Observer.

She said some of the competiton's past contestants have done very well for themselves. These include television personality Naomi Cowan; Nadine Thomas, Miss Jamaica Universe 1997; and Shelly Subratie, Miss Jamaica Supermodel 1995

"I am extremely proud of all of them," she added.
