DUB poetry group No-Maddz, in collaboration with gaming company Supreme Ventures, recently launched their Jamaica 50th anniversary commemorative song Sort Out Yuh Life Jamaica. The event took place at the Coral Cliff Hotel and Gaming Lounge in Montego Bay.
Sonia Davidson, vice president of corporate communications at Supreme Ventures, said her company and No-Maddz had worked on previous projects before so it was not hard for them to be sold on this venture.
"When we were approached by No-Maddz for assistance with this project, we were more than happy to jump on board. This is not our first business venture with the group, as we have previously offered our locations including Acropolis Gaming for them to have their concert, This time it's Coral Cliff," she said.
No-Maddz, in their song, encourage Jamaicans to enhance their full potential.
The Observer spoke with Christopher Gordon, a member of the quartet, who said that it was whilst on tour in Germany last summer that the idea came about to do a song dedicated to Jamaica's 50th year of independence.
"We have always pride ourselves as Jamaicans and knew that we had to contribute to the Jamaica's 50th anniversary celebrations. We didn't want to do the regular campaigning but one of commercial value. Therefore, as winners of the Prime Minister's Youth Award, we wanted to give back so hence came the single," he said.
The group comprising Sheldon Sheperd, Everaldo Creary, Oneil Peart and Christopher Gordon was formed in 2000 while they were students at Kingston College. The members are recipients of the Prime Minster Youth Award for excellence in the field of Arts and Culture in the years 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
One of their songs, Rise Above Poverty, was featured last year in the PUMA FAAS running shoes global campaign. Their other notable singles include The Trod, Bad Bwoy Ratty, Dangle and Babylon Paper.
