Orrett rhoden for UWI Chapel performance
Sunday, September 05, 2010
Orrett Rhoden, the acclaimed Jamaican pianist is set to give a recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on 8 October. This long-awaited recital is being presented by the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies and The University of the West Indies Alumni Association of Washington D.C.
However, Jamaicans will get a taste of this performance on September 19, as Rhoden is scheduled to perform the same programme here at the UWI Chapel.
A former child prodigy, Rhoden took Jamaican audiences by storm at the age of eight when he appeared on local television. At 23, Rhoden was discovered by BBC producer, Jenny Barraclough when he performed for Queen Elizabeth 11 and Prince Philip on their visit to Jamaica.
From his first international orchestral debut performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no. 1, with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre, in London (1984), Rhoden has been showered with accolades each time he performs. He has performed several times at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York and in concert halls in Europe, including the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Additionally, he has given concerts in the United States, United Kingdom, Poland (at the birthplace of Chopin), Canada, Mexico, France, Spain and Italy.
The forthcoming recitals at the UWI Chapel and Kennedy Center, Washington will feature a wide-ranging programme of Baroque composer Galuppi, Romantic Composer Chopin and Mendelssohn, the Classical master composer of all time, Beethoven and the Spanish composer Granados.
Rhoden's versatility, honed to a fine art, reinforced by his deep insight into each composer's work, is said to be the hallmark of all his performances. He is also reportedly gifted in interpreting the Romanticism of Chopin.
