PHIL Everly of influential country-rock duo, the Everly Brothers, died last Friday in California at age 74.

He and his older brother Don started their careers in the late 1950s and recorded a number of hit songs including Bye Bye Love and Cathy's Clown. They influenced a number of artistes including The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Bob Dylan.

It is doubtful the Everlys heard reggae singer Trevor Sparks' version of Bye Bye Love, which was their first hit in 1957.
