Yendi takes 2nd, creates history for Jamaica

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

YENDI Phillipps last night placed second in the Miss Universe pageant, creating history as the highest ever finish by a Jamaican in that contest.

Phillipps served early notice of her historic feat when she was named in the final 15, then the final 10 and outshone early favourites Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Ireland to place in the top five.

The contest was won by Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete.

If for any reason Miss Mexico cannot continue her reign as Miss Universe 2010, Phillipps, as the first runner-up, will assume the role.

The second runner-up was Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell; third runner-up, Miss Ukraine, Anna Poslavska; and fourth runner-up, Miss Philippines, Venus Raj.

Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell won the Miss Congeniality Universe award. Miss Thailand Fonthip Watcharatrakul won Miss Photogenic Universe and a second award for having the best national costume.

I love Jamaica no matter what.. even with the Dudus debackle I was still walking as a proud Jamaican... You must love your country from your heart and for deeper reasons than what the world may see... It's like your family/family name... you're proud and then sometimes things happen to make you grieve or feel shame but it never changes the love and pride you have... We love Jamaica for things the world may never know and understand... It's in our blood. So it is in LOVE in general.

Cam Cham. Miss World and Miss Universe are two different competitions, Yendi is the first to make it so far in the Miss Universe. Please check the facts. We have never won this one.

Rohan Fowler, please note the difference between the "Miss World" competition that Ms. Hanna won and this competition "Miss Universe" that Yendi did so well in....Anyway, people its not just a beauty contest as some modicum of intellect is displayed by the top contestants so please don't pour cold water on the success of another Jamaican on the international stage...

Correction everyone - this is the highest finish for Jamaica ever in the Miss Universe contest. Jamaica has won the Miss World 3 times. Apparently they are two completely different competition. Awesome job Yendi once again.

@ rohan fowler (lower case as u address urself), have you done your research, u arrogant twit? This contest is Miss UNIVERSE, Lisa Hanna won Miss WORLD and Seaga's wife (Mary 'Mitsy' Constantine (Seaga)) was merely Miss Jamaica. Educate yourself before you come and spew rubbish. Get the facts

Jamaica 1963, 1976, 1993
Listed is the years that Jamaica has won the Miss World. Yes, it has been a long time since we made it to the top five (17 years to be exact). Congrats Yendi you did your country proud. This was a great reminder to the world that Jamaica is a beautiful place with smart educated people.

@ rohan fowler- Lisa Hanna won Miss World in 1993 not Miss Universe.
Very proud of Jamaica. We didn't win but this shed such a good light on us as a people. The world knows that we don't all have 'Duduses' in Jamaica but good, upstanding and beautiful people.

I started watching the pageant from the start and I was very sure that Jamaica would have nailed it. However, I was very disappointed when Yendi answered the final question. She should have elaborated more, that would have given her the top spot but thank you, thank you, thank you Yendi... You made Jamaicans around the world proud. Much love to all yardies. Rohan, please be reminded that Miss World and Miss Universe are two different titles. Lisa Hannah won Miss World; not Miss Universe.
Well done, Yendi, you have made Jamaica proud.

had she held back on the "God" part in her answer, she mightv won it. Cmon, with mass audiences uve got to be carefull not to get carried away (religiously), though she did speak from her heart. And the for the person mentioning Lisa & others, the participated in Ms World, this is Ms Universe, a different contest, more popular in the americas & Yendis placement was the best ever by JCAN. Perhaps shell get the title in few months..if Mexico is dethroned..lol

@rohan fowler
you are the one who maybe embarassing yourself here. Please do you research again. Lisa Hanna et al won the MISS WORLD title. This really is the first time a Jamaican is placing this high in MISS UNIVERSE contest,
These are two DIFFERENT contests

Well done Miss Phillips we hope this serves as a motivation for a/ your frmr. record holder ( FRIEND) who usually freezes on the world stage. Mr Rohan Fowler the journalist is correct Lisa Hanna won Miss World not Miss Universe go google it.

@ Rohan Fowler Lisa Hanna won MISS WORLD Mitzy Seaga never did. Yendi is the first to come this far in the MISS UNIVERSE competiion. Before you try to insult someone it would be good to apprise yourself of the facts. @ R Rose I dont see how Bolt winning the 100m helps me, or the country for that matter but its value -priceless! in marketing JA.Things dont have to be tangible to have an effect, there is emotional satisfaction that does more for me than money ask your partner about it.

Rohan Fowler please do not embarrass YOURSELF. Instead of knocking the Observer for not doing research you should do some of your own. Those persons you mentioned won Miss World. Miss World and Miss Universe are two different things.

8/24/2010
to Rohan Fowler, Lisa Hannah won the Miss WORLD contest, not the Miss UNIVERSE contest, in 1993 and Mitzie Seaga placed THIRD in the Miss WORLD contest in 1964. Cindy Breakspeare won the Miss WORLD contest in 1976, not the Miss UNIVERSE contest (Big difference here). So perhaps YOU should use Google, do your research and quit making silly accusations about the competent Observer writers.

@rohan fowler:
Your comment didn't get censored nor omitted. It was put on blast to show what an idiot you are. Instead of criticizing the Observer, go research your facts. The women you are talking about have won MISS WORLD title. Jamaica has never won MISS UNIVERSE. I think you are the one who has embarrassed himself.
Congrats Yendi for a refreshing image of Jamaica. Congrats girl.

I try not to read comments especially the ones that are always negative. Yendi Phillips represented Jamaica at the highest level and whether or not you are a fan of Pageants, leave the negatives out. Thurstra, you seem to be all over with your negatives; negative on the "JTA welcomes facility.... I also would like people to get out of the mindset that success like this puts Jamaica on the map. One would have to be living under a rock, not to know of Jamaica and Jamaica, the envy of the world.

@Rohan Fowler. This is the Miss Universe contest. Miss World is a different contest. Cindy Breakspeare, Lisa Hanna etc. won the Miss World titles. Jamaica has never won the Miss Universe title. I think you are the one who should be doing some research. That said, well done Yendi. I thought you were overall the better of the two.

@rohan fowler, please, please do YOUR research FIRST! note:
"YENDI Phillipps last night placed second in the Miss Universe pageant, creating history as the highest ever finish by a Jamaican in that contest". "that contest" are the operative words. Lisa Hanna won indeed, BUT it was the Miss WORLD this is the Miss UNIVERSE.
An excerpt from u: "Please do not embarrass YOURSELF".

FYI Rohan Fowler..Lisa Hannah and the others mentioned won 'MISS WORLD''..not Miss Universe..you should do YOUR Research!

8/24/2010
@rohan fowler Miss Universe and Miss World are two different competition. Lisa Hanna won Miss World not miss universe. Yendi was the first jamaican to reach that far in miss universe
Ash Lee
8/24/2010
rohan fowler... perhaps you are referring to the Miss World competition... this is Miss Universe - 2 different events. Yes! Jamaica has had quite a few wins in Miss World in years past. We have never won Miss Universe however... this is the closest we've come and we are proud of Yendi!

Congrats to Ms.Phillips, she represented well and deserved her runner up placing. The young lady from Mexico just pipped her to the tape. The irony in all of this though,is that both Jamaica and Mexico are regarded as two of the most violently ugly countries in the world, yet they produce two of the most beautiful women in the world.

8/24/2010
Yendi... we are SOOO Proud of you. This was a fair competition i believe. To be fair, Miss Mexico was flawless from start to finish... It was definitely her & Miss Jamaica down to the wire - they were definitely the standouts.
I do agree though that the contraption of a gown they gave Yendi did not help her! Did anyone else notice the hem looked pinned up last minute??? I almost fainted... Good thing Yendi is so gorgeous it didn't matter much.
Go girl! You did your country proud :)

Well done! Of course I thought she should have won, but she made me proud to be a Jamaican after that dudus incident that left a bad taste. Yendi was a delicious reminder of how proud I'm of our little country

If someone can tell me how these beauty contests benefit our country, then i'll become one of the interested persons. Other than that, for me, these contests are just a superficial event of no real productive purpose. We are a nation of "plenty beautiful women" who are very skilled technically & professionally. We need to big them up & promote their skills to better our Nation. Just my thoughts/opinion.

I guess you dont know what you are writing about. Who write for the observer do you guys actually do your researches before you write., If you are not a professional Journalist might as well you use google then. What about Lisa Hanna who won it, what about Edward Seaga ex-wife who won it (name slipping me now). Please do not embarrass yourself. I know my comment will get censor and not posted. where is freedon of speech which include corrections or criticism

I am so proud to be Jamaican. Jamaica has done it again. Congratulations Yendi for flying the flag so high. Another historical moment for this tiny island.

I watched, and went to the internet and looked at the videos, she was the most stunning of all the contestants, she has the best figure(body) most toned, her walk, smile and the way she looked at the judges was most engaging, she looked the most beautiful in my opinion, but, according to the European standards , if you are not sharp features and all the rest ??? however, she would not have made it to 2nd place if she was not a first place winner "C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S"

Well done Miss Phillips !.
You make me feel very proud.
Additionally, I was very impressed with the way you craftily answered the question with respect to the "death penalty".
You were very evasive . (LOL).
You had my vote !.
I wish you the best in all that you choose to do. Stay sweet !.

i think that yendi should have won. i have a friend that speak spanish and based on the response that mexico gave and what the translator said.. the responses were different! i think when it came down to the final two it should have been JAMAICA & AUSTRALIA! this competition should have not been about a dress.. this is based off their overall performs... and YENDI did an amazing Job! she deserved the CROWN !
Jackie Reynolds
8/24/2010
Jamaica was robbed... The evening gown wasn't the best choice, but she was 2nd in that category and tops in swimsuit. Her median score, put her in 1st place. She had the toughest question and 'she killed it'/'done it'. Y they gave it to Mexico is beyond me, but YENDI DID AN AWESOME JOB!!!! CONGRATS
As for the person who thinks beauty contests r stupid, y do u watch them??? go watch sports...

8/24/2010
Congratulations Yendi! You did Jamaica proud. Don't let the small minds and haters (on this website or elsewhere) get you down. The best Ms. Jamaica we have had in almost 20 years. Big up!

congrats to Yendi..superb job!! Wow..and to wayne..if u think beauty contests are stupid, then so is athletics, boxing, horse racing, motor car racing, golf...anything thats competitive..think about it. Yendi placed JA on the map (again)...fantastic

Yendi did us proud. She is an awesome rep for Jamaica. She totally blew them away. Congratulations to Mexico. Her evening gown was PERFECT. In fact it got second highest score for Gowns.

Yendi did exceptionally well. Her night gown, however, did not do justice to her. In my opinion is was not elegant enough for a competition of this caliber. She did Jamaica proud.
