THIS month, Kevin Downswell will receive the Gospel Artiste Award from the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) at its annual ceremony.

Downswell, whose third album All The Way was released last year, is gratified at the recognition.

“The Jamaica Reggae Industry Association is Brand Jamaica. To be honoured as one of reggae music’s ambassadors, one who uses it as a vehicle to deliver gospel music globally, it is truly heart-warming and encouraging. I am very thankful. I give God thanks,” he said.

Downswell has been a force in gospel music for the past two years. He spoke about how he keeps relevant.

“I believe God has a way of uniquely shaping our paths based on our experience. We’ve all had different journeys as gospel ministers, different encounters with God; and certain encounters bring forth their own inspiration and revelations, and mine is no different. My experience walking with God, both through the highs and the lows, have all made my brand what it is. I am, however, always growing and tweaking as I endeavour to be the best me I can possibly be.”

Released last June, All the Way contains 17 songs including collaborations with DJ Nicholas and Rondell Positive.

Reflecting on 2016, Downswell described it as productive.

“It was massive for me, from launching my third album to many other breakthroughs, even in my personal life. I travelled to many countries, sang before audiences that were as large as 150 to 200,000 strong. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of all that,” he said.

The JaRIA awards take place at Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston on February 26.
