Almost 30 years after his first recording, Junior Holt still finds it a challenge to step out from the shadow of his famous father.

The singer, who has done songs for producers Clement Dodd and Sugar Minott, is currently promoting

Heartbreaking Lover, produced by the Road Thunder label out of New York.

Holt admits it can be frustrating pushing his career when his father, John Holt, inevitably enters the conversation.

“Yes, it’s tough ‘cause people always think that I got it easy or made, cause I’m the son of a celebrity,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “I’ve been in the music since 1988 and right now, at this time, I know it’s getting there.”

Holt senior died in 2014. He is, arguably, reggae’s greatest singer, with a massive catalogue of hit songs going back to the mid-1960s.

That track record is a hard act to follow, but Holt Jnr racked up a cache of songs by the time he migrated to the United States in 1995.

His latest production, Heartbreaking Lover, has a strong cast of musicians including Larry Silvera on bass, guitarist Dwight Pinkney, and keyboardist Lloyd “Obeah” Denton.
