YORK Castle High School came out on top in the first of two preliminary rounds of season six of Jamaica Best School Band (JBSB) competition held at Pembroke Hall High School last Thursday.

It secured the highest score of 36 points and were closely followed by Alpha Institute with 32 points. Mona High copped 31 points while Kingston High on 17 points. Camperdown High did not show.

The genres of music were varied: Alpha Institute with a seven-piece horn section did ska and reggae; York Castle High, which was commended by the judges for a groovy performance, did reggae as well. The performers stood out with their rendition of Bob Marley's Jammin'. Mona High was credited with “exciting vocals” as the youngsters went through a number of big ballads and funk, like Let's Groove by Earth, Wind & Fire.

Kingston High was late and this seemingly affected the members' performance. They managed to perform one song, Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, in the allotted 10 minutes.

Preliminary Round 2 is slated for today and will be hosted by first-time entrant Glenmuir High. St Jago High, Enid Bennett High, Foga Road High, Papine High, and Belmont Academy will also perform for judges Lloyd Parks and Chris McDonald.

This season's winners will receive recording and production of their original song and a music video courtesy of Irie Yutes Records; instruments from Music Mart, trophies from Royale Trophies, and make a guest appearance at the IRAWMA Awards courtesy of Alpha Studios.

The sectional categories are: Most Disciplined Band, Most Improved Band, Most Outstanding Performer (male and female), Band with Best Image; and Best Band Leader.

Last year's winner was Seaforth High.
