BIRMINGHAM, England — Danniel Thomas-Dodd wrote her name in the history books today after she became the first Jamaican woman to win a medal in the shot put at a global track and field event when she won the silver medal at the 17th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

And to put a cherry in the top Thomas-Dodd smashed her own national indoor record with a 19.22 metre throw, second best in the world behind gold medal winner Anita Marton of Hungary who won with 19.62 m.

Thomas-Dodd made up for just missing a medal at the World Championships in London last year when Marton won the gold on her final throw.

It was Jamaica's only medal of the day after Elaine Thompson could only manage fourth in the 60 metre final, edged out of the medals by Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji behind the Ivorian pair of Murielle Ahoure who took the gold and Marie-Josee Talou.
