KINGSTON, Jamaica — Road fatalities fell below the targeted 300 mark last year, the first time in over a decade.

The Road Safety Unit (RSU) of the Transport ministry recorded 256 road fatalities, 51 less than the previous year.

That’s just the beginning however. Speaking with the Jamaica Observer last week, head of the RSU, Kenute Hare said the unit intends for the figure to be under 200 in the next five years.

The National Road Safety Council launched the Below 300 campaign in 2008. Road fatalities were last under 300 in 1999 when the figure was 295.
